This is a print sample of the target image. The image was scanned 4 times at 100, 200, 300 and 400 ppi. The test sheet was printed on photo paper on an Epson Stylus 740 color printer in High Resolution mode (1440 x 720 dpi). Look at the enlargements to the eye area below to see the differences.

What do you want your visitors to see? GIF images are saved in a 256 color palette. If the end users browser dithers the colors you can get a fairly reasonable image. If it doesn't you get blocky color patches that won't do your photo justice. The file sizes are about equal but the image quality obviously isn't. Use JPG for photos. This is the target image. The image was scanned 2 times at 72 and 300 ppi. The 300 ppi image was reduced in Picture Publisher to 72 ppi.
