IMMUNOLOGY.WS

Mission

At the university of Rome tor Vergata. The aim of the Lab is to define molecular mechanisms governing programmed cell death. And to reveal program alterarions that can lead to disease. We are currently focusing on a monogenic disease - Friedreich’s Ataxia. In which the deficiency of the mitochondrial protein frataxin. Causes enhanced susceptibility to stress-induced cell death. Directed by prof. roberto testi. Follow us on FB.

Friedreich's Ataxia, a degenerative disease due to accelerated cell death. We selected a human monogenic disease in which accelerated cell death in specific tissues has pathogenic relevance. Friedreich's Ataxia. FRDA) is caused by the defective expression of frataxin. A mitochondrial protein involved in iron homeostasis. We defined the precise size of mature frataxin. A major player in iron metabolism. More recently, we identified the E3 ligase that directly ubiquitinates the frataxin precursor, RNF126.

Resources for Postdoctoral Fellows. Zika more potent on the brain than thought. Immunology Professor Dr. Michael Gale Jr. talks about how Zika virus has deep implications on fetal brain development. A recent study by UW Professors Kristina Waldorf, Lakshmi Rajagopal, and Michael Gale about the impact of Zika on fetal brain development shows that the way doctors diagnose Zika exposure in infants is far from sufficient.
