We bought an optional excursion to see the North Holland country side, not far from Hoorn. The area was nicknamed The Land of 1000 Islands. This was because the land in low lying and the only way the poor Dutch farmers could make a living was by hand digging out trenches to create canals thus creating “islands” which were about 60 meters square. Never leaves comments, I see . :). How not...

On the narrower ones you only see small boats but on the wider ones you can have house boats, sometimes on both sides of the canal. Some have smaller boats tied to them and people who live in these house boats use the smaller boats to get around the city. House boat is more expensive than regular flat . April 19, 2010 at 3:13 PM.

It was quiet COLD when we left Kalispell.I was surprised at how warm it was when we landed in Denver. By the time we got to Washington, D.C. (only a fast 5 hours later) the only thing I was concerned about was if there was something good to eat (and sadly Wendy's was the best answer) and where the bathroom was was! I think the worst part of traveling is TRAVELING. When do you get back?

Yup, I didn't put in too many zeroes. I already blogged about bikes here. One of the passengers from the previous cruise got hit by a bike and received a black eye. They think they have the right of way above cars. When you get to an intersection without any traffic lights, the cyclist just goes. April 18, 2010 at 3:57 PM.

The guides told us that Ghent was under construction - not much to see. Brugge is a medevial town that somehow never got destroyed and was pretty much abandoned for many years until it was recent "rediscovered" and is now a cultural heritage center. We saw many fantastic building styles, in it's was a wealthy port town.

Apparently you only see flowers all over the countryside in travel brochures. The Tulip is the national flower and it had a long history as exposed by our tour guide, most of which by this time I didn't listen to as I was on the look out for the flower fields.
