Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist

Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist. Tuesday, October 8, 2013. My Turn to Vent. Flashback: It is January 31, 1971, and my husband John and I are promising to stay together for richer or poorer, better or worse, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. People, are you listening to yourselves? I don't think so! So, I guess they are asking out of sympathy to him, because if I am not doing well, that is somehow hard on him. Wednesday, June 19, 2013. I prefer to believe that I have the privilege...

Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist: The People I Never Thanked - The Red Headed Girl

http://inadvertentoptimist.blogspot.com/2011/11/people-i-never-thanked-read-headed-girl.html

Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist. Friday, November 25, 2011. The People I Never Thanked - The Red Headed Girl. This happiness, however, is abruptly interrupted, as the principal walks by, stops at our table, and harshly says to me, "Why are you eating your dessert before your lunch? I am stricken with fear and embarrassment. What can I say? My friend is truly an amazing person! She is my champion, and the champion of Jews everywhere, even though she isn't Jewish! Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist. Friday, March 19, 2010. Despite this, we are all here. As the time for the seder approaches, everyone is dressed up, and chatting gaily, watching the babies' antics, and listening to our 6 year old granddaughter Hannah report that she is prepared to do the first of the four questions in Hebrew as a solo this year. I call everyone to the table and we begin. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist. Thursday, March 31, 2011. Reflections on 40 Years of Marriage. I hated to let our fortieth anniversary pass without writing about it - but I've had writer's block. Finally, I read through years of old journal entries, and I realized why. The reason that I find it hard to write about forty years of marriage is that I don't have a lot to say. Our story is amazingly simple. We fell in love, we stayed in love. In short, we were lucky. We haven't actually ever accepted...

Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist: May 2012

http://inadvertentoptimist.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Perspectives of an Inadvertent Optimist. Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Purim is a joyous holiday. It is celebrated with costumes, a carnival, and hamentaschen, a triangular filled cookie, said to be shaped like Haman's hat. Best of all, when the Purim story is read in the synagogue, the children are encouraged to make as much noise as possible, booing and shaking groggers (noisemakers) to drown out the name of the evil Haman, whenever it is mentioned. Of all of these activities, I especially look forward to th...

Inadvertently teaching my daughters to swear

Inadvertently teaching my daughters to swear. Saturday, December 28, 2013. Here are a few more contenders for my Nearing Forty challenge. A fair few short poems amongst them as I'm trying to be kind to myself. I did think about adding 'The Loch Ness Monster's Song' but I figured that might be a bit too tricky so I've gone for Edwin Morgan's beautiful 'Strawberries' instead. I should probably add a couple of out and out performance pieces too. a quick trawl through the Apples and Snakes. I turn 40 soon.

The culprit was clear during Sherlock's time. Coal fog. Killed up to 4000 people a week in London. Today's leading killers are again not diseases caused by germs. They are failing health ailments, usually chronic and slow, that cause 70% of deaths, affect about half of Americans, have quadrupled among children, and in 2015 led to decrease in life expectancy — type 2 diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, cancers, depression, anencephaly…. Reasons to think not:.

Everything is not going to be okay. It’s been a while since I dusted off this old blog, but the material seems appropriate. A friend sent me the following message about a Peggy Noonan op-ed titled “Two Miracles in Charleston” my response is below. Your thoughts on the matter? Usually not Peggy Noonan’s biggest fan, but in this case, she gets at something. Http:/ on.wsj.com/1Ki15us. I encountered this piece when it was published, and frankly, I think it’s Noonan at her most insidious. No, Peggy, everythin...
