Where our lettuce grows…. On February 19, 2012 · 2 Comments. We may have been. Until winter. Lettuce restored our faith in the miracle of horticulture. Of course, not the lettuce we planted in our beautiful veggie beds. In neat rows, with perfect spacing and regular watering. Not those. It was the extra seeds, the leftovers that we tossed around our empty corner of dirt at the front of the house. There had been a bush there that we pulled out and figured, what the hey! And, this spring, we are planting.

Getaway to San Luis Obispo. On April 23, 2012 · 3 Comments. A couple weeks ago, over spring break, we took a trip up the coast to San Luis Obispo. The drive up the coast is just long enough to feel like you are getting away, but not so long that you get restless. The beach here is stunning, the wind that day was out of this world, the flowers were in bloom….We got to walk on the sand, play with driftwood and see snowy plover nesting grounds- all good things! The wonder of creation. Love, love, love this!

From various residences to the Women’s Club and my middle/high school in La Jolla. The Lewis Courts, one of his first “social architecture” projects (built in 1910) still stands here in our small town. They stayed in their Jeep as we told them the story of the coat incident near Ada's doghouse - myself wrapped only by a thick Patagonia fleece in the place of my more trustworthy field jacket. Joe wondered if Lisa remembered that time when all they found of a coat was the zipper! Apparently, I've still got something to salvage.

From her neck to the tops of her toes, Elise came out of her room dressed for bed in a soft, white gown with braided cuffs just past her shoulder, a braid of her pinned back to the right side of her head. To top it off, she had put on a string of fake pearls around her neck. How many more years until I am a nuisance in her life? Ah, I tremble. I tremble.

Our journey toward a more sustainable life. Thursday, July 12, 2012. Mostly local: garlic dill pickles. Most everything seems to have come to a halt with the excessive heat that won't leave us be. We have a freezer full of chickens again, though, and Elise and I just finished cleaning and trimming our garlic for the next year - truly a rewarding crop to grow.
