The color of the cake in this recipe is fantastic! 1 1/2 cups of sugar. 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter, softened. 2 eggs, room temperature. 2 1/3 cups of cake flour. 2 tablespoons of Dutch-processed cocoa powder. 1 teaspoon of baking soda. 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

All of the sponge starter (above). 1 cup (8 ounces) lukewarm water, preferably spring water (100 to 115 F). 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons salt.
