Movie Reviews (such as they are). Wednesday, January 31, 2007. What most intrigued me about The Proposition. From the outset was that it was scripted by songwriter/musician Nick Cave. I have a certain fascination with Renaissance men, possibly because I quite fancy myself as one. Or is that jack of all trades, master of none? Yeah, maybe that's what I am. The film also had an interesting cast, including Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, and Emily Watson (whom Wife. If I'm honest, The Proposition. And I had inten...

Movie Reviews (such as they are): December 2006

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Saturday, December 30, 2006. When the Levees Broke. Spike Lee's four-and-a-half-hour post-Katrina New Orleans documentary When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. The first two "acts" of Spike's documentary exposé were totally compelling and kept me glued to my screen. I was, by turns, shocked, appalled, and in disbelief throughout. The pace flagged a bit in Act III, and then picked up again for the final hour. This was an excellent, not to mention important, film&...

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Sunday, June 17, 2007. The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Every once in a while a film comes out trying to tackle the delicate and complicated history of "the struggles" in Northern Ireland. The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Is one such film. I have seen some stuff on the subject, but despite the whole thing being on my doorstep, and despite having grown up during a period of bombings by the IRA, my knowledge of all of this is incredibly patchy. In these days of wars on ter...

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Tuesday, April 24, 2007. Tzameti (aka 13 Tzameti). Once in a while, you see a low-budget movie made with friends and family that really makes you think, "Yes, this is what film-making is all about." Tzameti. Which is the Georgian word for 13, making the supposed alternative title somewhat tautological) is just such a film. Labels: black and white. Posted by DTW @ 5:58 AM. Sunday, April 15, 2007. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from Hard Candy. Although I vaguely kn...

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Tuesday, July 24, 2007. On paper, Hollywoodland. Was always going to be a big zero. And the mixed reviews I've heard seem to confirm that. Ben Affleck: check. Tale of long-forgotten actor: check. That big-nosed motherfucker from Summer of Sam. And (yawn, probably) The Pianist. Check So far, so unappealing. But, for me at least, it worked. Is a return to form for Ben, at least. And that Pianist. Type of tales, à la Agatha. Posted by DTW @ 4:55 PM. Monday, July 23, 2007.

Movie Reviews (such as they are): February 2007

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Sunday, February 25, 2007. Quo Vadis, Baby? To be honest, it's a while now since I watched Quo Vadis, Baby? And it hasn't really stayed with me at all. Much of the time, if I don't write a review straightaway, it's because I was uninspired. That's not always the case, but often. The plot leads her to pay particular interest in her sister's last lover. It was all right, but not much more than that, with a couple of half-decent bits here and there. Posted by DTW @ 9:32 AM.

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Casino Royale: contains spoilers. First, to my ever-dwindling band of readers, sorry for the hiatus. No wonder my numbers have dropped, right? Anyway, I have a huge list of reviews to do, but I'll start with last night's movie: Casino Royale. You may or may not know, but traditionally I hate James Bond films. From a childhood glimpse of Live and Let Die. I knew this was not a genre for me. It was like a bad episode of The Dukes of Hazzard. I rath...

Movie Reviews (such as they are): August 2007

Movie Reviews (such as they are). Friday, August 31, 2007. The Last King of Scotland. You must have heard of The Last King of Scotland. It's the one where Forest Whitaker plays Idi Amin, and he won an Oscar for it. Course you have. It's based on a true story, y'know.*. This kept me gripped and laughing quite a bit for the first hour. The second hour went a bit more slowly for me, as it became a bit more "by the numbers". Still good, but less interesting, I felt. ( The wife. Disagreed, though.). Shot on d...
