Sailing on Inland Seas: Straight Up
http://inlandpacket.blogspot.com/2015/06/straight-up.html
Monday, June 01, 2015. They look even better installed. Old set is on the left. I've been wanting new standing rigging. This was triggered by a post made to a photo I posted over on the Wooden Boat Forum from 1st Annual Messabout. Rich Jones posted "Thanks for the report. It's always great when WB friends can get together. From the photo, your Lido 14 seems to have an extreme forward rake to the mast. Is that part of the design or just a weird camera angle? I also know it's affecting her sailing with tha...
Sailing on Inland Seas: A Better Direction
http://inlandpacket.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-better-direction.html
Wednesday, June 03, 2015. Looks a littler closer to this now. So I was cruising the interwebs last night and came across a great blog about a 1958 Lido restoration: https:/ restorealido14.wordpress.com. It is a wealth of information about keeping these older boats in top condition. So while I sat there and ruminated on what needed to be done to Lido #1280 the rudder came to mind. Just a bit too long. That looks much better. August 1, 2015 at 5:41 PM. Thanks for the mention. Keep up the good work!
Sailing on Inland Seas: A Boat Won't Fix Itself
http://inlandpacket.blogspot.com/2015/04/a-boat-wont-fix-itself.html
Friday, April 17, 2015. A Boat Won't Fix Itself. Wonderful Day in Western Montana. The first thing I wanted to do was to add the bits I ordered from DoubleWave. About six months ago. Nothing major, the two mainsheet traveler slider stops and the trim for starboard side transom. We talk about our boats being unique. Well mine is certainly no exception! Looks much better then a piece of rope. New ratchet straps for the trailer. Trailer wiring. All of it. Get the battery ready and charged. I can't wait to g...
Sailing on Inland Seas: Dreaming of Smaller Boats

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Dreaming of Smaller Boats. Schock's definitive family sailboat doing what it does best. Photo by S/V Desdemona. This will end up being one of this rambly posts that those of us in the boat building/owning blogsphere are infamous for. I have several already on this very blog so add some wood to the fire, get a good foot reast and bile up a pot of tay. We need to talk about the next boat. She really is a crew boat. At least one other hand is so nice to have it's almost a necessit...

Instant Boat---Indeed......: September 2010
http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 12, 2010. Brightwork is pretty much just varnished woodwork. Pretty stuff, but the varnish doesn't hold up quite as well as paint and so needs touch up work (sand and recoat) much more than paint. Still, darned pretty stuff. I've pretty well decided that I will have some brightwork on the boat, namely on the gunwales and around the mast step. Here one can see the gunwales in fresh varnish. If it keeps the mildew away, all is well and good. Here is the working side of the attempt to glue...
Instant Boat---Indeed......: When Things Go South
http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2011/07/when-things-go-south.html
Saturday, July 9, 2011. When Things Go South. In many ways the construction of my boat is nearing the end- though there is plenty more to share here. Still, even with the boat built, there's much more to be learned.sometimes in ways that I'd rather not. Well, while I was able to do some sailing this year, singlehanding was being strangely elusive (people seem to like riding in my boat). Today (yes, a column written the day of the event! In the course of this, I learned a lot of interesting details that w...
Instant Boat---Indeed......: November 2010

Monday, November 1, 2010. Sticky Wickets- or Fun with Epoxy! Ok, back at it. Of course I'm falling behind on my blogs, as will be really obvious with the next post. Once I had bullied the hull together (well, it seemed that way with the chines.) I did a little informal test to see if I had any major problems with leaks. This was another James idea that he tried with smaller boats and it seemed plausible to me. This was a one pint plastic container- a little smoke and heat and bingo, a hockey puck! But I ...
Instant Boat---Indeed......: A Little Paint......
http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2011/04/little-paint.html
Saturday, April 23, 2011. Well, Spring is finally sort of making an appearance. The sun came out and temperatures finally creeped above the 40's. Gee, it's almost May and the tulips haven't even bloomed yet! A couple days ago I finally pulled the tarp off the Pica and moved it over to the sawhorses/workbench. There I realized I rather botched the "long winter's sleep department". On the outside, more things pointing out that better storage is needed:. So what to do? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Instant Boat---Indeed......: It's a SAIL boat--
http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2011/01/its-sail-boat.html
Wednesday, January 12, 2011. It's a SAIL boat-. Well, some folks have the power of denying themselves gratification, but I'm just not that disciplined. With the bull together, oars in hand and a mast raised, it wasn't much more to cut the sail and booms, figure something of the rigging and have that in order. The leeboard and rudder- well they deserve their own stories (oh boy.). Suffice it to say, time to take the boat out. So, August 26 was the fateful day, and worked out to be a pretty good one. Just ...
Instant Boat---Indeed......: Other People's Teals.....
http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2012/09/other-peoples-teals.html
Saturday, September 1, 2012. So, today I went out to Frenchtown Pond with the Pica and met up with James with the Blue Flower. You don't really see much mention of Teal's really showing up in groups, but sometimes they do. An excellent comparison of sail plans of the Pica (left) and Blue Flower (former Annas Discors) on the right. Don't let that gaff rig fool you. To suggest that I take the boat out. He said the Blue Flower is touchy and edgy with the wind- well he was right. The Blue Flower is a very se...

Instant Boat---Indeed......: May 2012

Sunday, May 13, 2012. A Turning Point, the evolving rudder. Who would have thought that sinking my boat would take the wind out of my blogging sails? Egads The story is not over (not by a long shot. I won't steer you wrong- in fact lets talk about steering! Being cheap and not really seeing anything cheap and easy to procure, the first thought was: why not make them out of wood. Yes! Wood gudgeons and wood pintles! It is a wood boat after all, no? Wait though. Wasn't the Annas Discorse. So, what resulted...
Instant Boat---Indeed......: August 2010
http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 29, 2010. One thing I have found is that boats do not come with square corners. Well, I suppose if I built a barge or a box boat, such as a PD Racer, I might find some square corners, but a double ended sharpie like the Teal comes with virtually none. Sometimes you just need a little dab to do ya. Using a plane like an old style box grater was what worked in this case- but watch your fingers! All that fuss for what? Friday, August 27, 2010. Keep those knots on the inside folks. Well why no...

Tuesday, December 05, 2017. Where We're Going We Don't Need Plans. Just a quick update. Skat plans arrived! Went to see my boat building buddy Whiskey Carl who looked them over, smiled and eventually informed me we'll be building a catboat in the traditional fashion to my preferences. As it stands I'm looking at boat based on the Joel White Marsh Cat with a cuddy cabin in the style of historical cruising catboats. I'm still in a bit of shock but will update soon. Monday, July 03, 2017. The fact is I'm re...
