My images of the insect world. August 23, 2013. I’ve grown fond of a pair of hummingbird hawk-moths that make twilight trysts to our garden. They’re quite a sight, as their wings beat (vibrate) at such a rate that they are almost invisible… if that’s not a contradiction! In fact, the only way I was able to see what they actually look like was to take a photo. Hummingbird hawk-moth on Laurentia ‘Indigo Stars’. August 18, 2013. Dock bugs on a dead leaf. Coreus marginatus (dock bug) nymph on a chive head.

My images of the insect world. Hear no weevil, see no weevil. September 5, 2013. When I picked up a candle in my house to smell it, I did not expect to see this on the other side:. Apologies for the blurry picture – my camera doesn’t seem to like indoor lighting. Or, at least, that’s what I’m blaming it on. Perhaps it was trying to avoid being tracked with one of these transmitters: http:/ www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-23784135. Why are they such a pest? Nymph, but older now:. My images of the insect world. September 7, 2013. I realise that rosemary beetles are a pest, but they’re such a beautiful colour! You can almost see my camera’s reflection in this one. I’d prefer it to leave the rosemary alone, however. Well, I’m still excited about finding it, because it’s the first I’ve ever seen. This entry was posted in beetles. Hear no weevil, see no weevil. Ladybirds | Entomiscellanea
https://insectphotos.wordpress.com/2013/08/26/ladybirds
My images of the insect world. August 26, 2013. Ladybirds are known as ‘helpful insects’, eating aphids before they can eat our flowers. But then there’s the issue of certain varieties (namely those of the species. Its spread certainly has been rapid, as this image shows: http:/ www.ladybird-survey.org/harlequin spread UK.aspx. The danger is that if the other varieties die out, we will rely on only the Harlequin for aphid control. Last year I spotted two types of Harlequin ladybird in the garden:. Who kn...

Garden Watch: Predator vs. Alien | Bring Me Bees
https://bringmebees.wordpress.com/2013/08/23/garden-watch-predator-vs-alien
Saving the world one humble bumble at a time. Top tips for saving bees. Garden Watch: Predator vs. Alien. This wasn’t the only exciting addition to the garden. After getting back from my visit north of the wall, I was over the moon to find that my “Blue Ripple” Sweet Peas were finally starting to flower. Now to most people, they’re just sweet peas. Sweet peas flower all the time, right? Thankfully it would appear that, at present, the temporary Bring Me Bees garden is in an area that has not been affecte...

Entomiscellanea | My images of the insect world
My images of the insect world. March 29, 2015. Beetle is supposedly quite common in the UK, this is the first (and only) one I have seen, so I was thrilled when it landed on me in the garden last June. It’s an interesting-looking insect – alien-like, I think, with its long, shiny green body and hairy, bulbous ‘thighs’. Those distinctive legs (femora/femur) show that this one is a male. Thick-legged flower bug (o. February 4, 2014. Here are a couple of my favourites, with no real theme to them…. Finding a...
