How to Teach Your White Kids to Fight Racism. June 18, 2015 in Students. A few years ago, some academics did a study of racial attitudes in small children. They wanted to find out whether generic assurances that everyone’s the same on the inside the standard white liberal catechism of racial good feeling actually make a difference in whether kids turn into bigots. So if you’re a white parent who wants your kid to not turn into a casually creepy bigot at the age of six, you need to talk about race. On our...

Paul’s Socialist Investigations. 8220;We would become much more sane, much healthier, as a society if we could bring ourselves to acknowledge that misogyny is a serious and pervasive problem”. Rumours of the Conservatives’ death in Québec have been greatly exaggerated. Naomi Klein is no pseudo-socialist, pseudo-progressive. She’s the real deal. [w/ video]. 20 August, 2009. The Unworthy Attack on Sara Goldrick-Rab. July 18, 2015 in Students. In the last few days sociology professor Sara Goldrick-Rab, one of the nation’s leading advocates for free higher education, has come under sustained and increasingly preposterous attack for some of her social media posts. And they aren’t likely to be of much lasting interest beyond the fainting-couch brigades of the online right-wing. Back on May 31, a graduating high school senior posted this group photo of himself and some friends ce...

Poll Finds Young Voters Really Really Hate Trump. May 3, 2016 in Students. Remember that poll from last week that found that young adults weren’t big fans of capitalism. Well, I just stumbled across the full report. And it has some interesting stuff to say about the upcoming presidential election. So how’s Clinton doing with young Democrats? Pretty well. The poll has her beating Trump 83 5 with that group, which is almost on par with exit polls from 2012 and 2008. Trump, on the other hand, beats Clinton ...

A point I’ve often made in response to sky-is-falling critics of classroom trigger warnings is that there’s no substantial movement afoot to make them mandatory. Where trigger warnings have been adopted, it’s been voluntarily by professors. Today, however, FIRE reports. That “there are several colleges and universities that, as part of their sexual miscondu...

Stop Saying that Nobody Supports Rape. Lots of People Support Rape. June 2, 2015 in Students. When I write about sexual assault on this site, particularly when I talk about the difficulty in combatting sexual assault, one comment recurs over and over:. 8220;Nobody supports rape.”. But of course it’s not true. For starters, of course, there’s the fact that rapists exist in society, most of them unpunished. Because these comments threads that are full of people saying that nobody supports rape? This wasn&#...

My Body, My Choice: On Parenting, Bodily Autonomy, and Ice Cream. July 21, 2011 in Feminism. A few months ago I was out at a fancy ice cream place with my eight-year-old daughter. She got chocolate chip, and on a lark I asked for a taste of tarragon and pink peppercorn. It was delicious, and I wound up buying a cup. No, she said. My body, my choice. I’ve used that phrase with her and her sister since they were toddlers, trying to drum it into them. Don’t want to hug your grandma? Your body, your choice.

In a statement released after yesterday’s unprecedented vote. To impose tuition, “we will also work together to develop a contemporary mission for the institution.”. How did this happen? This is heartbreaking, and...
