The Assault on Reason. The Assault on Reason. Is the new book by Al Gore. Covering the fall and, well, fall, of the level of political debate in the US and the level of political knowledge and engagement of the US citizenry. The fact that there isn’t shouldn’t be considered a weakness of the book – it’s not. Is one option something like a “Spin School” resource? Posted: 03 Jun 2007. Making Government statistics more accessible. What would happen if a site was designed to be reused, as well as used? Altho...

Missing Off (non-NHS) Maps. Given it’s the OSM London Hack weekend in a few days, here’s something there’s already data for, but is still sitting on my todo list (ie, it exists in enough of a form to do, I’ve just not actually had time to do it). The various NHS services (Hospitals, GP surgeries, Pharmacies) are all marked on OSM; and separately on the nHS website. There is not necessarily any link between those two datasets, yet, if provided with a list. Is exceptionally helpful on this topic. I work to...

Reusing cycling infrastructure for non-cyclists in Cambridge. This is the view from my window a few times a day:. Someone in a wheelchair, or riding a different mobility aid, rolling down the middle of the road because the pavements are too narrow. Cambridge is old, and cycling infrastructure does not just help cyclists, it helps people who are mobility impaired going to other places. Good infrastructure helps everyone. Posted: 28 Oct 2014. Looking for Bailii Streisand. Updated 3 (august 2015): Bailii did an audit. Updated 2: Followup blogpost. Updated: Bailli have responded in the comments. When UK courts pass judgement, many of the higher courts send a copy of their written judgement to a service called Bailii. As soon as they are published, to go on the web. Unless the cases get deleted. I’m sure there is a justifiable reason for case Birmingham City Council v LB [2014] EWHC 981 (Fam) (21 March 2013). How widespread is that problem?

Some thoughts on surveillance. In response to the assassination of Charlie Hebdo cartoonists and others, there are renewed calls in the UK for more powers similar to those that failed in France, and which have failed in the past. After the last post on this topic. There was the a discussion. With Bailii in the comments, and their behaviour in regard of taking cases down has changed. This is to be warmly welcomed. In the absence of any public comment, it took me a little while to figure out what this new behaviour is. Bailii, of course, continue to honour legal requirements. Bailii have started stating why they remove. Disappeared and then came back. (We continue to effectively ignore cases in the Family court, where reporting.
