The Poem as an Organism. Tuesday afternoon students will explore the poem as an organic piece of art. We will first discuss, with the aid of Billy Collins' "Introduction to Poetry," the fears people harbor about poetry. Just why are such close readings of text in fact legitimate? Students will explore the importance of sound in the poem and its relation to content. Focus this session will first center around the poem as a means of enjoyment as students read such poems as "Jabberwocky" and create their own nonsensical work. Focus will then shift to the relation between sound and content. The poem as an audible form of enjoyment - Read " Jabberwocky. Discuss its merits - Is such a poem enjoyable? Students will be introduced to poetry as "a made thing." We will explore the differences between "good" and "bad" poetry as differentiated by their use or lack of concrete images. We will also discuss a Linda Patsan poem, "Ars Poetica," which alludes to several views of the writing process. Introduce poetry as a made thing. How is poetry written?
