In the Footsteps of Heroes

In the Footsteps of Heroes. Monday, 9 November 2009. Day 14 - The Great Escape. The last update left us wheezing at the main gates of Aghios Pavlos (St Paul's Monastery). We were all exhausted, and the last climb up the slope to the gate seemed to go on forever. Tyson had won the race, but Mike was close on his heels - employing imaginary ski poles to help propell him up the slope! As we walked down the hills from Aghiou Pavlos, there was little enthusiasm for another hot day of climbing. We had alre...

In the Footsteps of Heroes: October 2009

http://inthefootstepsofheroes.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

In the Footsteps of Heroes. Friday, 30 October 2009. Day 5 - On the pilgrims route. We were rather reluctant to leave Arnea. It seems that plenty of European money has been spent restoring the distinctive galleried buildings, and we were certainly grateful for the warmth of the fire in the lobby of the guesthouse opposite the church - it is getting colder each day we are here, and as soon as you stop walking the cold and the damp seep into your bones. The route down the hill cannot have changed significa...

In the Footsteps of Heroes: Day 13 - The long walk out

http://inthefootstepsofheroes.blogspot.com/2009/11/day-13-long-walk-out.html

In the Footsteps of Heroes. Saturday, 7 November 2009. Day 13 - The long walk out. For once we were on time for breakfast - a bowl of gigantes (giant beans in a thin tomato sauce). With hunks of the heavy bread, an apple and some grapes, we were set for the day. Still, it was a lovely gesture, and I am sure that we would be welcome again. We then followed him on a merry dance around the buildings trying to find Sandy's hiding place. The view down to St Anna was incredible. The path crossed a high bla...

In the Footsteps of Heroes: Day 8 - On Holy Ground

http://inthefootstepsofheroes.blogspot.com/2009/11/day-8-on-holy-ground.html

In the Footsteps of Heroes. Monday, 2 November 2009. Day 8 - On Holy Ground. Anyway, 68 years of progress has thrown up plenty of bureaucratic obstacles. With heavy hearts we conceded defeat, and trotted down to buy a ferry ticket. No copies of 'Dare to be Free' which is pretty poor - they even had Athos cookbooks! The ferry arrived by 0900, and we watched as vans and lorries arranged themselves on the deck. All around us swarthy looking men were having a final coffee and cigarette before heading on ...

In the Footsteps of Heroes. Wednesday, 4 November 2009. Note from the editor! Apologies - Day 10 has now been rejigged and consists of an amalgamation of two emails from Chris, the expedition leader, so please see the below blog. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Dare to be Free'. Following the escape route of W.B 'Sandy' Thomas, from the site of the POW camp in Thessaloniki to Mount Athos. Day 14 - The Great Escape. Day 13 - The long walk out. In the Footsteps of Heroes: Day 7 - Preparing for Athos

http://inthefootstepsofheroes.blogspot.com/2009/11/day-7-preparing-for-athos.html

In the Footsteps of Heroes. Monday, 2 November 2009. Day 7 - Preparing for Athos. We had originally planned for a rest day in Pyrgos (Ouranopolis), but at the last minute decided to split the last day. Tired feet and all that. Our 'rest day' therefore was to begin with following your footsteps on the short walk from Ierissos to Pyrgos. The cutting got more impressive further south, and to avoid the road we branched off the track to the south-east, sliding about on tracks cut through the heavy clay soil.

Wednesday, June 20, 2007. Has had it's first release. Posted by evan @ 12:52 AM. Friday, January 05, 2007. I've been doing some development with internet explorer 7 and it has been anything but pleasurable. The latest little gotcha has been with the zoom feature. When you zoom in or out links get all messed up. The mouse over on links gets offset by the zoom so that you must click in a different location than the actual link in order to follow it. This is causing some big problems for my current project.

Just another WordPress.com site. September 1, 2011. With Leipzig as my base for the next couple of days I take the train to Dresden. It rolls through a postcard-friendly landscape of hills interspersed with villages defined by a church spires. Or, Dresden finds itself labelled as the Florence of the Elbe? Who does Florence model itself on, except Florence? I could have wished Mr Wortley’s business had permitted a longer stay in DresdenI am partial to a town where they profess the Protestant religion.
