The Glowing Scroll: February 2015

Friday, February 20, 2015. The Power of Language. People have spent years analyzing the song lyrics of Bob Dylan and the Beatles, looking for hidden messages. But the real deep content can be found in the pop and doo-wop records of the '50s and early '60s. Take a look at these lyrics. Recite them, out loud. Preferably with other people around. Do it over and over. Then, you'll understand . Shoobie doobie wah doowop eewobbie wobbie. Shoop shoop shanga langa shingabop. Dum dum diddly dum.

Saturday, May 19, 2012. Learning from the Reptiles. A few years ago I bought my wife a tortoise as a gift. Why? A fit of madness, I guess. Predictably, I wound up being the caretaker of this reptile, which will now be a burden to my family for the next 100 years or so. Anyway, I began to absorb some lessons about how God relates to us from this phlegmatic little creature, which my wife named Lulu. I’ve learned to pick her up from the back and bring her close to. But, a relationship is possible. Nowad...

The Glowing Scroll: April 2012
http://theglowingscroll.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 9, 2012. Once I went on Google Earth and tried to find the place where I used to live in the woods of northern California. My old digs weren’t near any major cities or landmarks, so I found myself scrolling over endless miles of nondescript wilderness on the computer screen. I couldn’t find it, and finally gave up. I think dreams are always about something. Don’t you? Posted by Bill Ireland. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). In the Footsteps of Tychicus. 1 John 3:4 observations.

Monday, February 20, 2012. Are you a good listener? Most of us think we are. But when someone is sharing from the heart, it's hard to resist a few things that can make us. Talking over the other person. Replying with our own experiences. That last one is especially tempting. I indulged in it just yesterday. Probably will again. But nothing can make a person shut down more quickly than sharing about their upcoming cancer surgery and hearing, Oh, I know! What does that look like? Posted by Bill Ireland.

The Glowing Scroll: The Evolution of a Song
http://theglowingscroll.blogspot.com/2016/09/the-evolution-of-song.html
Saturday, September 10, 2016. The Evolution of a Song. It's the Womack Brothers out of Cleveland, Ohio. They became popular as a gospel group under the watchful eye of their father, Friendly Womack. After Sam Cooke heard them, he invited them to come record for his SAR label. So they drove a beat-up Cadillac to Los Angeles and recorded this gospel tune, "Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray" in 1961. The Womack Brothers have followed the lead of their mentor Sam Cooke and gone in a secular direction. Because, like ...

Wednesday, September 21, 2016. Why We Have a Bill of Rights. Until relatively recently, it was illegal to read the Bible aloud in which country? Of course, you knew it was a trick question. And by "relatively recently" I did mean the 16th century. But it's true—at one time you could go to jail for reading the Bible aloud—in Great Britain. That posed a threat to the king's authority as head of the church. He soon found himself indulging in the same repressive behaviors he had condemned the Pope for. Henry...

Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Some Words Are Just Funny. Dying is easy. Comedy is hard. That quote has been ascribed to nineteenth-century actor Edmund Keene, and various other sources, but its truth is borne out by the many people who have tried to be funny and bombed. A corollary is that humor writing is hard too. Making people laugh at words on a page may be one of the most daunting tasks a human can undertake—right behind parallel parking. Here are a few of my favorites. What are yours?
