Into The Woods and Elsewhere: March 2014
https://intothewoodsandelsewhere.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 31, 2014. Northern Shrike at Belle Isle. So I went to the meadow area on the south side of the island. This can be a very good birding area in April and May. Large chunks of ice were stacked up against the island. I walked along the south shore and didn't see much until a bird fluttered in a tree. I was surprised to see a Northern Shrike. This is the first I've ever seen at Belle Isle. The photos below are a few of many. Posted by Cathy Carroll. Sunday, March 30, 2014. The next morning I op...
Into The Woods and Elsewhere: August 2014
https://intothewoodsandelsewhere.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 23, 2014. Hungary: Other good birds that should not be overlooked. Not the greatest photos, but definitely good birds taken in various areas around Hungary. Purple Heron ( Ardea purpurea. Turtle Doves ( Streptopelia turtur. Taken through the front window of the car. We saw these a few times, but overall their numbers are way down secondary to shooting. Yellow Wagtail ( Motacilla flava. Yellow Wagtail; this bird knows where its bread is buttered. Baby Penduline Tit ( Remiz pendulinus.
Into The Woods and Elsewhere: June 2014

Sunday, June 29, 2014. Several times in my prior Hungary blog entries, I've mentioned Gerard Gorman's name as my field guide for the trip. Gerard was excellent - no two ways about it, and if you're planning a birding trip to Hungary, he's your man - or should be at least. But, there is also much more to say. A lot of narrative follows, but I think it's worth reading. Immediately, we had a response. One more play of the drumming and this juvenile black woodpecker flew across the road from the woods on...
Into The Woods and Elsewhere: Piping Plover
https://intothewoodsandelsewhere.blogspot.com/2015/06/piping-plover.html
Wednesday, June 24, 2015. My photo is a near match with the photo used in Paulson. But it's the habitat description that contributes more:. In jail for its own benefit. During all three visits to the point we saw a hunting merlin. But with a pass to leave whenever it wants. Very brief excursion from jail. Sarah Toner found these footprints in the sand which we thought might belong to the piping plover. The footprints were found a reasonable distance from the safety cage. Posted by Cathy Carroll. Post #73...
Into The Woods and Elsewhere: October 2014
https://intothewoodsandelsewhere.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 2, 2014. Hungary: A few warblers. River Warbler ( Locustella fluviatilis. Overall hard to see. Sedge Warbler ( Acrocephalus schoenobaenus. Great Reed Warbler ( Acrocephalus arundinaceus. Cuckoo silhouette. Where ever you see or hear a great reed warbler you will see or hear a cuckoo. Above and below - Savi's Warbler ( Locustella luscinioides. A real skulker singing deep in the reed beds. Icterine Warbler ( Hippolais icterina. Above and below. The only yellow-throated European warbler.

Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: May 2015
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Recap of birding "The Biggest Week". I am working n a couple of new posts about the Biggest Week in American Birding. One will be about what I call "senior birding". My hips just do not like hiking and standing as much as they used to and the event and area offer so many things that do not require extensive effort. Another will be showcasing photos I have not shared previously. "Stay tuned". In MY mind it is all the same book! I am an addict! Then just use the b...
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Biggest Week: Pearson Metropark and a ramble on Kenn's Coverts
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/biggest-week-pearson-metropark-and.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Sunday, May 26, 2013. Biggest Week: Pearson Metropark and a ramble on Kenn's Coverts. I am going to start with a "ramble". The rest of the subject will be addressed shortly . This was our last day for attending The Biggest Week in American Birding. Anyway, I decided then that I would not push it as far on the next day, and just head home for the two hour drive in the morning. It was a good decision - but, damn! It not only taught me about birds, but it also taught me about how I learn!

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Friday, May 30, 2014. BWIAB - A highlight. Banding demo at BSBO. I am finally getting around to posting memories from The Biggest Week in American Birding. We always take home SO many memories and photographs from BWIAB, it is almost overwhelming to try to write about them! To see all of the scheduled happenings. But sometimes it is just serendipity that establishes permanent unexpected memories. Off to one side of the parking lot by the Optics Alley tent, there was a woman presenting...
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Biggest Week in American Birding - A fisherman has become a birder! I FEEL IT!
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/biggest-week-in-american-birding.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Wednesday, April 8, 2015. Biggest Week in American Birding - A fisherman has become a birder! Caveat: Anyone who knows me also knows I tend to "ramble"! And here I give insight into my past as well as how my new overwhelming fascination of things that tend to fly rather than submerge. Hey! Birds are just things from the skies rather than things from the depths, but it is all similar! And, birding is much more easily accessible! Yeah It is a long one, but cheaper than buying a new book!
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Playing States and Plates at the Biggest Week in American Birding
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/playing-states-and-plates-at-biggest.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Playing States and Plates at the Biggest Week in American Birding. Let's play "States and Plates" for the birds! This is a fun game for kids! And anyone who birds will know it is also a great - and much easier - game for adults. It is sure much easier to spot and record license plates than trying to spot warblers flitting in trees or lurking in the underbrush on the forest floor! Judy and I started going to the Biggest Week in American Birding. I remember that o...

HOW TIGHT IS YOUR SAFETY NET. No two days are ever the same. The next 6 hours. Madeleine M on the boundary. HOW TIGHT IS YOUR SAFETY NET. July 23, 2015. July 23, 2015. Whilst not the most adventurous of adults, I think I’m pretty open to many things. Everyone’s comfort zone is different. We have always taken our boys to the beach, we have held their hands and dunked them under waves before they could walk, they are used to the tumble and loud sound of the waves crashing on the beach. The beach is my R...

Celebrated 5 birthdays (Meisje, Gideon, Annelise, Olivia, and Debbie) as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Went camping in Zion National Park and Lake Tahoe. Spent two weeks in Alaska. We switched to Gluten free foods. I won't go into all the details of all of our adventures, but I figured that I had to start somewhere if I wanted to blog again. These girlies love books!

Into the Woods and Elsewhere
Sunday, March 25, 2018. The first thing is that two of my friends, Artemis and her brother Harold, have started on on-line field journal with their sketches called Field Notes. Definitely worth having a look. The second thing is to alert everyone to a New Yorker article by Jill Lepore titled, The Shorebird: The right way to remember Rachel Carson. Starting on page 64 of the Mar 26, 2018 issue. This New Yorker issue is also notable for its "the emperor has no clothes" cover of you-know-who. Finally, some ...
