Modern Dragons: Pain/pleasure metaphysics-- a request
http://moderndragons.blogspot.com/2011/05/painpleasure-metaphysics-request.html
Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. Pain/pleasure metaphysics- a request. Lately I've been looking into causal connections between brain states and pain/pleasure. I'm finding plenty of material on specifics such as nociceptors, gate circuits, correlative fMRI studies, and so forth, but there doesn't appear to be a lot of research, or even much speculation, on the general question. Are pain and pleasure, in relation to systemic properties of the brain? Ditto for sadness and happiness.

Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. The new site redesign is now live! Thanks to some beautiful artwork by my friend Corby. And some ugly html hacks by me, Modern Dragons now features a dragon. Speaking of which, it's high time to answer the question:. What's a Modern Dragon anyway? Modern Dragons: Transhumanism essay: part one
http://moderndragons.blogspot.com/2008/03/transhumanism-essay-part-1.html
Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. Transhumanism essay: part one. For an interesting movement.
. There’s a growing number of people who believe technology is going to make things Really Different around here. And while they’re still essentially a loose-knit, fragmented movement, they’ve made significant inroads among society’s movers. And simply rich people. So what’s all the fuss about? Enhanced humans, or even "mere" improved computer networks and human-computer interfaces. But- dare...

Modern Dragons: 10 Reasons Why
http://moderndragons.blogspot.com/2006/09/10-reasons-why.html
Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. A little lighter (and yes, tongue-in-cheek) fare this time. Back to the usual soon. 10 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Argue with Just a List of Reasons. 1 It's overdone. Digg and Reddit are plastered with 10 reasons why this and 10 reasons why that. This argumentative structure is also often used as a rhetorical crutch because it's so easy to write with, thus tainting any argument so expressed with a suggestion of incompetence. 5 I like- even prefer- itemi...

http://moderndragons.blogspot.com/2008/04/dark-and-murky-effects-of-hfcs.html
Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. The dark and murky effects of HFCS. I like America a lot. But lately I've been wondering, "what's going on here? The latest poll numbers are in, and I'm clearly not alone. The AP is now reporting that 81% of Americans think we're on the wrong track. As Bob Herbert of the Times. Opines in today's column, Losing Our Will. This dysfunction is clearly a matter of willpower, not capacity. So what's happening and what can we do about it? And devotes more an...

Modern Dragons: Neurogenesis
http://moderndragons.blogspot.com/2006/06/neurogenesis.html
Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. After thousands of years of viewing the brain as a mysterious black box, we're finally starting to understand a little bit about how it works. Basic neural research is finally bearing real fruit, giving us real insight into phenomena as diverse as addiction. And, for better or worse, perhaps setting the stage. For some really wild engineering projects. I heartily recommend Seed Magazine's special on neurogenesis and mood. Malberg et al. (2000) [2].

Modern Dragons: A simple and cheap proposal for improving American health
http://moderndragons.blogspot.com/2009/09/simple-and-cheap-proposal-for-improving.html
Speculations on the frontiers of science and culture. A simple and cheap proposal for improving American health. Earlier this summer a pediatrician friend of mine was asking about ideas for health care reform since Olympia Snowe was going to stop by her hospital and talk with the doctors there. Unfortunately Snowe cut her visit short, but this is what I came up with:. A simple and cheap proposal for improving American health. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
