A Scottish Liberal: March 2015
http://scottish-liberal.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Monday, 30 March 2015. Why anti-SNP tactical voting may not work. Recently, we have seen widespread appeals for non-SNP supporters to unite behind the party best placed to defeat them in the forthcoming General Election. There are online campaigns, instructing people in various seats how best to use their vote to thwart the SNP. The Conservatives realise this, hence their anti-SNP rhetoric looking to scare English voters into voting anything but Labour. The evidence is that, while an unintended by-pr...

A Scottish Liberal: October 2014
http://scottish-liberal.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 29 October 2014. Malcolm Bruce's letter exposes nature of Lib Dem-Tory relationship. The Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Malcolm Bruce, has written an open letter to Conservative MPs following accusations that Lib Dem MPs have blocked Bob Neill's EU Referendum Bill. I'll let the letter speak for itself, but it underlines the nature of the current relationship between the coalition parties, in addition to exposing the degree to which the fear of UKIP features in Conservative thinking.

A Scottish Liberal: December 2014

Wednesday, 31 December 2014. My predictions for 2015. Will we all be friends after the General Election? More positively, it was the year in which the myth of Brazilian invincibility was destroyed in a few minutes at the Estádio Mineirão, the year in which marriage equality was finally legalised in the UK (with the exception of Northern Ireland), and in which Ed Miliband showed us all how not to eat a bacon sandwich. I wasn't too far off the mark with Luis Suarez, either. Nick Clegg will survive Labour's...

A Scottish Liberal: April 2015

Wednesday, 1 April 2015. Should zero-hours contracts be shown zero-tolerance? Vince Cable told Radio 2 that Miliband's. Proposals are not "practical". A great deal is being said about zero-hours contracts at the moment, and rightly so. This doesn't go far enough for some. Plaid Cymru has unequivocally committed itself to "say NO to Zero-hour contracts." While it actually appears, on further investigation, that Plaid is actually opposed to mandatory. But what will Labour's policy achieve? Labour's contrib...

A Scottish Liberal: June 2015
http://scottish-liberal.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 2 June 2015. Some reflections on Charles Kennedy's life. Charles Kennedy speaking in Glasgow, 2013. Like many of us, I was shocked and saddened in equal measure to learn of Charles Kennedy's passing. Whatever can be said of Charles, there can be no escaping his political courage. Earlier today, I wrote for KaleidoScot. He did not, however, explain why. Two former SDP MPs, two former leaders:. Charles Kennedy and Bob Maclennan in 2013. I loved him for it. I still do. Links to this post. Andrew ha...

Sunday, 10 May 2015. What the General Election told us. Paddy Ashdown: doesn't he have some. Headgear to get his teeth into? It’s a few days now since the voters of Great Britain gave us an election result that was as surprising as it was unpalatable for liberals (and I mean in all parties and none, rather than merely Lib Dems). If our losses in Scotland were painful but perhaps expected, the annihilation in England certainly was not – I had predicted 23 MPs (i.e. around 1992 levels) becaus...The SNP won...

Tuesday, 27 January 2015. Remembering Holocaust Memorial Day. Today various events across the UK mark Holocaust Memorial Day. From Lewis to Cornwall, thousands of people will remember the estimated eleven million victims of the Nazis’ systematic and brutal killing machine – as well as those who have been killed in subsequent genocides. T he theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2015. Is “Keep the memory alive”. As a bisexual person of Jewish descent Holocaust Memorial Day has a specific and profound personal ...
