H a b i b i S a i l s: Flashback: How we ended up on Block Island
http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2013/11/flashback-how-we-ended-up-on-block.html
A Swiss couple sails around the world. Flashback: How we ended up on Block Island. Shape of Block Island: locals call it a "pork chop". It was mid-April in Culebra/Puerto Rico when we met Bill (an American cruising bartender with Irish roots, we mentioned him already in this former post. We all have a certain picture in mind when we hear "Bermuda" - sup-tropical climate, turquoise water, offshore companies, Bermuda triangle etc. But what's the picture when you hear "Block Island"? According to our friend...

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Flashback: hot, humid and calm - our last stretch. Habibi entering the C&D Canal. After winning the battle against the stinging flies (and the Coast Guard - but that's another story.) in the Delaware Bay we faced our very last anchoring maneuver behind Reedy Island. In the Delaware River. Thinking of our friends Chris and Steve on Scott-Free. THE GAP (photo credit by " Cruisin' with John and Deb. Then we turned West into the C&D (Chesapeake and Delaware) Canal. ...
H a b i b i S a i l s: Bermuda - Trip Update
http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2013/05/bermuda-trip-update.html
A Swiss couple sails around the world. Bermuda - Trip Update. Imagine this view for 6 1/2 days. Sorry for the delay – but as we have no internet on board everything takes more time. As promised here is the update on our longer crossing from Puerto Rico to Bermuda. In simple words, it was surreal! We left Palmas del Mar Marina in Puerto Rico early on Wednesday morning 8. For three days in a row we saw sustained winds of 30 – 40 knots and seas as big as houses! The rest of the stormy days we stayed on a st...
H a b i b i S a i l s: Flashback: Battle of Habibi
http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2014/01/flashback-battle-of-habibi.html
A Swiss couple sails around the world. Flashback: Battle of Habibi. We experienced a more or less uneventful sail from New York down South towards the Chesapeake Bay. Area - well, we managed to escape a few squalls and not to pick up one of the numerous lobster pots on the way. Ah, and a school of dolphins accompanied us for a while. When entering the Delaware Bay. We encountered a well known phenomena (which, truth be told, had nothing to do with our shower intervals! An ordonata attacking and.

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Final flashback: Habibi's Sailing Adventure 2011-13. It's been more than a year that we pulled into Rock Hall/Maryland to end our sailing adventure of two years and to start a landlubber's life once again. In the meantime Habibi has found new owners and we are certain that they care for her as much as we did. Now, kick back and enjoy the show! Picture below shows us on our maiden voyage. Right after we had left the dock in Rock Hall/ Maryland back in October 2011.
H a b i b i S a i l s: 900nm ahead!
http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2013/05/900nm-ahead.html
A Swiss couple sails around the world. Even if many ocean crossing saltwater sailors may laugh - we're a bit nervous about the upcoming trip. If weather permits we will sail from Puerto Rico. Straight up to Bermuda. And if you check the map carefully you may even find Bermuda on it. It's not some fly poop in the middle of nowhere, it's actually a bunch of islands, tiny and "just right" off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on the US East Coast. This morning ( Tuesday. That's almost as challenging as the trip...

H a b i b i S a i l s: Newport sucks, really!
http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2013/06/newport-sucks-really.html
A Swiss couple sails around the world. Newport sucks, really! Coffee Stop at Castle Hill with Durbin. We stayed now for more than one week in Newport. And as the title says, it really sucks. And if you think it cannot get worse, there are those people! Take Bill for example. We met him back in Culebra, Puerto Rico, where he was working in the "Dinghy Dock Bar and Restaurant" on the weekends. He actually owns a well known Irish pub back in Charleston himself (" Dunleavy's Pub". He insisted to show us arou...

Shower Water Dam
To keep the water confined to the shower on our boat we built a water dam below the folding door. Tuesday, March 23, 2010. When we first started looking at Island Packets we met Pam and A.D. Wilson, owners of Pappy's Packet, a beautiful blue hulled IP420. They invited us aboard and showed us all the great features of these boats as well as some of the modifications they had made on theirs. It was actually the time we spent with them that convinced us to buy an Island Packet 420. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Upcoming Projects
These are things we'd like to do, to add or change before we get underway in 2015. Thursday, September 22, 2011. The "Gotta Have It" List (with ongoing updates). We've gotten most of our electronics up and running with new instruments at the Helm ( click here. And Nav Station ( click here. This year (2014) we still a short list of must-have items before we head out in the Fall. ICOM M-802 single side-band (SSB) radio with Pactor 4 modem and KISS ground system. We also added a 6kw genset ( click here.
Mast Mods
Monday, April 19, 2010. Projects for When the Mast is Down. I decided since I had to replace the light I might as well do it right. I invested in a tri/anchor light made by OGM ( Orca Green Marine. The new mast light combines the 3 navigation lights used on boats while they're underway ( Navigation Lights. Island Packet ran a length of braided cord through there to be used for pulling wires. What a great idea! What were they thinking? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Use These Links to Cruise This Site:.
Interior Lighting
Upgrading the interior lighting on our boat. Tuesday, January 18, 2011. Had given us a really gorgeous brass anchor light but for the main salon we wanted something less nautical. We went to Annapolis Lighting ( link to their web site. There were actually 4 or 5 styles that were all very similar. They were all small which is perfect for on a boat. They all had brass stands and etched glass globes. Several were made by Waterford (cha-ching! Posted by Tom Cheri. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Forced Air Heat Installation
Forced Air Heat Installation. Living aboard our boat, we needed a better heating system to get us through the Winters. Detailed description of an Espar diesel heater on an Island Packet sailboat. Thursday, February 19, 2015. Note: For further info on the Espar heater see the archive at right. After a few days of this I climbed down into the cockpit locker and did some maintenance on the heater. I was pretty sure the problem was in the blower that supplies fresh air for the combustion process as well ...
La Vida Dulce
We lived aboard our Island Packet sailboat for five years preparing it and ourselves for extensive offshore cruising. This blog is about those preparations and modifications to the boat. Sunday, January 3, 2016. What am I doing? I'm stuck in the dirt and I've become totally domestic. And I'm almost enjoying it! What happened to the boat? OK, so life does get in the way of our dreams sometimes. No problem. Just re-boot and we're back on track. Assembling the controls and components went quickly and I'm no...
