Newspaper Man: Roscommon and paying double for music

http://irishjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/01/roscommon-planning-process-and-paying.html

The blog of an Irish journalist. Monday, January 26, 2009. Roscommon and paying double for music. Last week's incest and neglect case in Roscommon is the most disturbing case I've covered. Barry Andrews, minister for children, was quick to react and by Saturday the HSE announced it was to hold an "independent" inquiry. Mairead O'Shea in Roscommon reported from the mother's trial for us in the Sunday Times as we covered the the legal issues and fallout surrounding the case. In a focus piece. 8220;People w...

Newspaper Man: Planning and dealing with reporters

http://irishjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/01/planning-and-dealing-with-reporters.html

The blog of an Irish journalist. Tuesday, January 27, 2009. Planning and dealing with reporters. One other yarn I had last week was about the residents of Creighton Street. In Dublin agreeing to withdraw a planning objection for the tidy sum of 1.6m euro. Fair enough point I thought so I offered to meet him in person and show my credentials. But this was met with a "I'm not helping you find out anything," before he hung up. I suppose it depends on how much information the journalist has as to whether the...

The blog of an Irish journalist. Thursday, February 26, 2009. The Supreme Court sat last week to hear a case in Irish. While the state has battled for the Irish language in Europe it's not as keen to give it equality when it comes to the hundreds of statutory instruments that are published each year in English only. Article eight of the constitution. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Twitter Updates 2.2: FeedWitter. The return of Gama and other yarns that made the w.

Newspaper Man: First post

http://irishjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/01/first-post.html

The blog of an Irish journalist. Tuesday, January 13, 2009. I've been meaning to start a proper blog for some time now. My first attempt, robohack.journals.ie. Is lying in a state of disrepair and neglect and I can't figure out how to pull the damn thing down. I began that blog in 2006 after John Breslin. Boards.ie founder and lecturer, gave a talk to my postgraduate journalism course in NUI Galway on the merits of blogging. Almost three years on, and hopefully more time efficient, I'll have another go.

Is that shorthand?: In the public interest

http://isthatshorthand.blogspot.com/2011/10/in-public-interest.html

Saturday, 22 October 2011. In the public interest. FOI: The reporter's friend? The freedom of information act (FOI) is a welcome tool for journalists, but using it to access records in certain cases can be a prolonged ordeal. If an original request is refused, and they often are, the appeal process can be tricky and take a long time with no guarantee of success. The department in this case was willing to receive representations from public representatives on behalf of third parties but was reluctant to m...

Is that shorthand?: Benchmark

Wednesday, 2 November 2011. Newspaper Man: Mark Tighe. During my last post on The Sunday Times' FOI request for records of politicians lobbying for barristers and solicitors to become judges, I mentioned the information released would be worthy of a blog post on its own. Mark Tighe, the ST journalist who broke the story, has now written one which. Mark Tighe's Newspaper Man post is here. Mark Tighe also wrote a Focus article in the ST on the appointment of judges. Is that shorthand?: Fingers in every pie

http://isthatshorthand.blogspot.com/2011/11/fingers-in-all-pies.html

Thursday, 10 November 2011. Fingers in every pie. Our golf cup runneth over. This is a photograph of a photograph that has annoyed Pearse Doherty, the Sinn Fein TD. The ST featured the shot in a recent Atticus column, but I thought it was worth another mention here. Doherty believes it is "inappropriate to have somebody of the character of Michael Fingleton on the walls of Leinster House given the damage he has caused to the country". "It is well past time that this picture was taken down from its pe...

Crime, ink: September 2009

http://irishcrimereporter.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

The world of an Irish crime reporter. September 21, 2009. 8220;I know this is a stupid question, but I’m paid to ask them: how do you feel? His face betrays a gamut of emotions: terror, disbelief, despair, denial. While I shake his hand, he stares off into the distance, as if he is can’t quite comprehend what is happening to him. He looks as if he hasn’t slept since he walked free from a Garda station, 17 hours earlier: but who could blame him? The previous night he had been arrested after Brenda died fo...

The world of an Irish crime reporter. July 19, 2009. 8220;He ruined my life.he ruined our mother’s life.”. She walks into the court, accompanied by the garda who had been with her 11 years earlier. Back then, she was a terrified 14-year-old, sitting in a room off the court, getting ready to give her evidence to the judge and jury via videolink. It was a year after Simon McGinley raped her when she was just 13. It was a year after she had secretly, unwillingly, hit the headlines as the C case girl. After ...
