CR10 record card intro. Albert Bestic, RS2 No 32709, from Dublin. According to his CR10 card, Albert Arthur Bestic was born on 26 August 1890 in Dublin. He held an ordinary master’s ticket and had served as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve during the war. He was ranked as a mate and appeared to be working in the home trade as there are no voyages shown on his card. He began his sea career as an apprentice with Richard Thomas of Liverpool on the sailing vessel Denbigh Castle.

CR10 record card intro. Central Index System:- Fourth Register of Seamen 1913-41. Three earlier attempts to create a central register for seamen had ended in 1857 and were not resumed until 1913. This register consists of three types of index cards held in four separate indexes. CR1 and CR2 cards between 1913 and late1921 have been destroyed although the CR2 voyage information between September 1918 and December 1921 has been entered on to the CR10 card. CR10 record card intro. Robert Boyd, RS2 No 376674, from Islandmagee, Co Antrim. World War Two submariner. According to his CR10 card, Robert Boyd was born in Islandmagee, Co Antrim on 2 July 1903. He served as an ordinary seaman on Head Line ships from November 1918 until early 1921 so it appears that he was 15 when the photograph was taken. His father, also Robert, was a merchant seaman and a member of the Royal Naval Reserve. He was called up in August 1914 and served with HMS Carmania.

CR10 record card intro. Shown below are both sides of Christopher Herbert’s CR10 card. The number of the identity certificate corresponds to that on the photograph. His rating is AB which is ‘able seaman’ and his nationality is ‘British.’. On the photograph side, the first entry 106009 is the unique Official Number of the ship and the date 1.19 indicates that he joined the ship in January 1919 for a foreign voyage. Six foreign voyage starts are shown in total.
