Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Great Albums: 48 - Secrets of the Beehive (David Sylvian, 1987)
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2012/08/great-albums-48-secrets-of-beehive.html
Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Great Albums: 48 - Secrets of the Beehive (David Sylvian, 1987). Stripped down to their bare essentials, with Sylvian's soft as Andrex voice whispering huskily in the middle of everything and Ryuichi Sakamoto's string arrangements draped over anything left over, these songs are as near to perfect a collection as any songwriter has ever managed. Sylvian singing 'September' live, 1995. Posted by Stuart Douglas at 3:16 pm. Links to this post:. Subscribe to Half a Dozen Streets.

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Great Albums: 46 - The Marble Downs (Trembling Bells and Bonny 'Prince' Billy, 2012)

Monday, August 27, 2012. Great Albums: 46 - The Marble Downs (Trembling Bells and Bonny 'Prince' Billy, 2012). A friend of mine is fond of saying that you can compile a sensible Worst Ten Hollywood films list without once stepping outside the back catalogue of Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger, and while I'm not so sure of that (any Top 10 with no Braveheart. I made a date with an open vein/And with scarlet matter emblazened your name". Spotify Link to Album. I Made a Date video. Links to this post:. Try, fail, t...

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: June 2005
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 22, 2005. More Hustle than Whore. Following an unfortunate incident when an idiot ran me off the road a month or so back, the trusty Micra had to go into the garage and, consequently, I had to remove the hundred or so CDs which had accumulated there (this was less because I feared that sticky fingered mechanics would be unable to resist the temptation to pinch a pile of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Cds and more in case they stood on the cases scattered in the passenger side foot well). And it's...

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Great Albums: 47 - Extricate (The Fall, 1990)
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2012/08/great-albums-47-extricate-fall-1990.html
Thursday, August 23, 2012. Great Albums: 47 - Extricate (The Fall, 1990). The first single off the album 'Telephone Thing' was a bit of a concern. I saw Smith do it with dance floor types, Coldcut. And - with the exception of the reference to elderly Easteneders' actress Gretchen Franklin. Can't say I thought much of it. Shades of bandwagon hopping (as Madchester dominated the music scene) are not accusations usually aimed at the Fall, but they could have been at that point. Bill is Dead" on SnubTV.

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: September 2005
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 28, 2005. The opposite of every cloud has a silver lining. Hearts beat Rangers 1-0 on Saturday past (which was brilliant obviously). I had several large shandies during the day however and managed somehow to lose my copy of Stanley Elkins The Magic Kingdom. Mentioned in my last post. As a result, I've had to switch to Charles Williams Many Dimensions. It's a great book, but wouldn't have been my first choice for a Williams re-read (that would be The Place of the Lion. I'm taking an e...

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Great Albums: 43 - It'll End in Tears (This Mortal Coil, 1984)
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2012/09/great-albums-43-itll-end-in-tears-this.html
Sunday, September 02, 2012. Great Albums: 43 - It'll End in Tears (This Mortal Coil, 1984). I was sixteen in 1986. Not a good age, really - no girlfriend, an obsession with kids' tv show Doctor Who (those two facts may be linked) and a preference for wearing diamante jewellry, white silk shirts and chains of pearls (that fact may also be linked to the first one). Sure, I had the Smiths and Bowie but the real unflowering of music for me was still twelve months away. Anyway, in some ways this single album ...

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Another Day
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2012/02/another-day.html
Monday, February 27, 2012. Just ended up randomly browsing to last.fm for the first time in a couple of years. And, due to the magic of little Java applets, I know know that these are my most commonly listened to tracks in the past twelve months:. Song to the Siren. Antony and the Johnsons. Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Chopin - Nocturne In B-Flat Minor, Op. 9, No. 1 - Larghetto. Jackson C. Frank. Blues Run The Game. Gymnopedie No. 1. Consolation No. 3 In D Flat Major. I loved you a long time ago, you know.

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Great Albums: 45 - Delay: 1968 (Can, 1981)
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2012/08/great-albums-45-delay-1968-can-1981.html
Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Great Albums: 45 - Delay: 1968 (Can, 1981). OK, so it's a complilation album, really, and of outtakes at that. But those lovely fellas at WasistDas asked me to have a think about this album for a project of theirs and, you know what - it's my favourite Can LP. Yeah, it's Malcolm Mooney. Not Damo Suzuki, and the dynamic is totally different. Originally intended to be their first album (aparently to be named ' Prepared to Meet Thy PNOOM'. Plus the reunion Rite Time,. This LP and...

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: March 2005
http://iriswildthyme.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 29, 2005. One thing that just struck me is that the Doctor Who author who's going to get the most publicity from 'Rose' is Kate Orman - googling 'Doctor Blue Box'. As Rose (almost) did throws up a pile of links to Kate's book of the same name. Posted by Stuart Douglas at 12:52 pm. Links to this post. Monday, March 28, 2005. He's Back - no, really, this time he is. All the great stuff, now. I still don't like the TARDIS interior set, mind (well it wouldn't do for any Who fan to. The TARDIS ...

Half a Dozen Streets and a Bit of Waste Land: Great Albums: 44 - Ready for the House (Jandek, 1978)

Thursday, August 30, 2012. Great Albums: 44 - Ready for the House (Jandek, 1978). A certain person will be along in a moment to claim that I'm being wilfully obscure, but nowadays Jandek is a cult classic, not a scary wierdo. That's right, isn't it? On first listening Ready for the House. Is it even meant to be? Take the opening track 'Naked in the Afternoon'. Stick it on in the car as you drive through the pouring rain one dark winter evening. Put it on repeat. And I bet you that you'll be s...Or some J...
