Irving Ruan — The Next 50 Years
http://www.irvingruan.com/post/26451717717/the-next-50-years
The Next 50 Years. They will be scary. They will be crazy. They will be amazing. When you look at human technological progress up until the Renaissance, it really wasn’t all that impressive and glorious. Sure, there were some important milestones: inception of stone tools, the wheel, gunpowder, paper, and other raw materials. They, more or less, enabled the basic means such as transportation, resource management, and transfer of knowledge. But they weren’t. And come to think of it, the personal computer ...
Irving Ruan — Simplicity Is Complicated
http://www.irvingruan.com/post/63851251755/simplicity-is-complicated
Edit #1: You are working on something important. It’s obviously something that requires a lot of attention and time. You know that it has to be simplified because you have to eventually explain why and what it is you did to people who may not have the experience and knowledge you possess. You mull over it because simplifying things is complicated. Edit #3: Since nobody really likes using complicated things, simplifying them is hard and takes a lot of time and attention to get it right.

Irving Ruan — The Magical Room
http://www.irvingruan.com/post/54791725779/the-magical-room
Too often do we fall under the impression that building something, especially in the world of software, entails being handed a specification by the product and design team and then fleshing out the code for it. It’s sometimes treated as two step process, more or less. But, this process doesn’t work for everybody. And nor should one enforce this style simply out of tradition. Mdash; be more than. Just a two step process. While not everyone may subscribe to this process, it is essential to note that a team...
Irving Ruan — My People
http://www.irvingruan.com/post/70251633100/my-people
I am reminded, time after time, how fortunate I am to be surrounded by people at work and in my personal life who naturally get me. While not every single one of them may agree with me on certain ideas, they respect my views nonetheless. I recently read a piece. By the very talented Michael Lopp. That summarized my feelings perfectly. Some of the aforementioned people live on the other side of the country while others are my neighbors — but ultimately, they are my people.

numist the fool, The Changing of the Guard
http://blog.numist.net/post/4046384460/the-changing-of-the-guard
The Changing of the Guard. I met Craig Federighi last year, and I liked him immediately. He is personable, well-spoken, and smart. I chatted with him about the past, present, and future of Mac OS X in his office at Infinite Loop, interrupted only by a call from SJ, for which he gracefully excused himself. In fact, during our whole meeting, it was impossible to find anything out of place with him—he’s got his shit together. Craig is going to do a great job. Congratulations. Posted 5 years ago.

Brad Cox's "Object-Oriented Programming" (1986) - tumblilarius lukhnos
http://blog.lukhnos.org/post/4400884121/brad-coxs-object-oriented-programming-1986
Brad Cox’s “Object-Oriented Programming” (1986). A few weeks ago I had a chance to re-read this particular book by Brad Cox. It is also the first book that introduced the Objective-C language to the world. For the rest of the book, Cox describes the features of Objective-C in detail with an example of using the language to build a visual graph manipulation tool. Some syntactical features are no longer found in today’s Objective-C (e.g. the. Cox, Brad J. Although gcc has been supporting gc-capable Objecti...

numist the fool, Why I don't mind being Google's product.
http://blog.numist.net/post/7304607455/why-i-dont-mind-being-googles-product
Why I don’t mind being Google’s product. Google makes billions of dollars in revenue each fiscal quarter. That money comes about by the same process that all companies use: They sell a product to their customers. Their customers pay money for that product. Who’s Google’s customer? When’s the last time you paid Google for anything? Advertisers are Google’s customer. What do they sell to advertisers? They sell you. Or, at least, they rent you out, or provide access to you. Would I rather no ads at all?
