Flyfishing the River Irwell and other Streams.: Irwell Ewood Bridge 31 Jul 15

Friday, 31 July 2015. Irwell Ewood Bridge 31 Jul 15. Went a day early to do my kick sample, the insect count was a bit low on the Olives but up on the Cased Caddis. the river was still pretty low. As always I had a fish, I also took lots of photos of the invasive weeds by the river for the Plant Tracker web site. No Giant Hogweed but loads of Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed. Up from the bridge where last time I caught fish there seemed to be nothing at all, where they go and why I do not understand.

Monday, 31 August 2015. River Tonge and Bradshaw Brook 30 Aug 15. Went to Leverhulme Park where Bradshaw Brook joins the river Tonge to fish and check out a "No Fishing" sign on Bradshaw Brook that Dave Bendle had asked me about. I also did my usual and photographed the invasive weeds on both waters, there is lots of it down there. Doesn't stop me casting a fly and catching fish, but it has to be done with care as the bank side under growth is very lush. I was now up to where Bradshaw Brook joins and I b...

Thursday, 31 July 2014. Ewood Bridge and Bradshaw Brook 31 Jul 14. Some rain over night and lots more forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Went a day early to Ewood Bridge for the August kick sample, the river was up a little and had colour. The sample was pretty much the same as last month but still well down on last years figures. One difference was Water Snails, the first time that any had turned up in my sample. Although it did not look very promising I decide to have a fish. Thursday, July 31, 2014.

Tuesday, 23 September 2014. The Irwell Ladyshore 22 Sept 14. The Irwell is very low but as Ladyshore is after the Roch comes in there is usually a fair bit of water and so it proved. Fished the weir and up with 2 spiders, nothing doing. Sat for a bit whilst i thought about a change, then tried a Copper John nymph fished across and down, same result. Moved down the riffle not hoping for much, when another take which did not stay on for as long as the first one. No joy there, or from the weeded area below.

Monday, 29 June 2015. Bradshaw Brook Fly Fishers Beat 29 Jun 15. Managed to get a couple of hours on the brook this early evening. It's been warm and sunny most of the day and I expected there to be a good hatch. Maybe it started after I left, never mind I still caught a few on dry fly. This was my first one, came to a Adams from the pool behind the score board. I had missed a couple and then the fish stopped rising to my fly and was about to move on when this one came to the net. Monday, June 29, 2015.

Sunday, 1 February 2015. Kick Sample Ewood Bridge 1 Feb 15. Very cold wind but a clear blue sky good for walking but not for getting in the cold river. River still quite high, but not as high as at the start of January when I did not do a sample, very few Olives in the the sample, cased caddis about normal. This is where I get in the river and take a sample just below the Ewood Bridge. After taking the sample I took a walk up the river still some snow and plenty of mud. River running near clear. I always...

Tuesday, 9 December 2014. Walking from Bury back to Bolton 9 Dec 14. Caught the bus to Bury town centre to walk back home via Elton Reservoir. First went to the "Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre" to see what they had on. Found it a bit strange, how about a crushed Cessna , full size, that had been uncrushed. Is that art or sculpture? And some strange stuff up stairs in the art galley. Started my walk going down Manchester Road passed the town hall. And then off to the right at the Italian Restaurant.

Tuesday, 11 August 2015. Irwell Ramsbottom 11 Aug 15. More Photos for Plant Tracker and some fishing of course. Last time I was here I had a good day, today started poor. I fished down stream nymph to begin, as the only easy access to the beat is up river. Eight foot rod floating line and a Goldhead Copper John. I had seen fish rising on the way down so I was very hopeful of catching on a dry fly on the way back up. Changed the tippet and put on an Adams, cast to a couple of rises with no result. Friends...

Wednesday, 27 May 2015. River Tonge 28 May 15. The last two mornings have been spent cutting my privet hedge, two thirds done. Was going to finish it tomorrow but the rain has come and is set to stay until tomorrow. I will just have to be content with going fishing instead. I did have short trip to Bradshaw Brook yesterday, not very enjoyable, dogs in the brook again. Today I went to the Tonge, which started very frustrating. The Giant Hog Weed has gone mad and the Japanese Knot weed also. I was going to...

Thursday, 8 January 2015. Walking Hindley to Wigan 8 Jan 15. The reason for the walk was to go down the 21 locks on the Leeds Liverpool Canal ending up at Wigan Pier. Bright sunny day but cold with a steady breeze. I caught the train from Bolton to Hindley, from the station I turned right towards Aspull. Not far before I came to the end of the houses and the entrance to Hindley Hall Golf Course which I needed to cross to get to Top Lock. Quite a grand looking club house. On to a muddy path. Instead I cam...
