Sylvester Sameach! | From Beach to Beach
https://beachtobeach.wordpress.com/2012/01/04/sylvester-sameach
Life on a new shore. From Beach to Beach. A very Happy New Year from Israel! Israelis don’t really celebrate the secular new year, they do Rosh Hashanah instead, so in order to differentiate the two they call this one Sylvester. If my research is correct, it is named after the Catholic saint Sylvester, who was a horrible anti-Semite and whose saint day is December 31. Go figure that one. I think I’ve given up trying. Or donuts. Here, latkes (. I was actually only home once to light candles with my friend...

Pilgrimage on the Pilgrimage Holiday | From Beach to Beach
https://beachtobeach.wordpress.com/2012/06/04/shavuot
Life on a new shore. From Beach to Beach. Pilgrimage on the Pilgrimage Holiday. This year, my Shavuot was significantly different from what I usually experience in the States. Shabbat: it’s difficult to go anywhere in Israel on Shabbat because everything is closed and only sheiruts run (busses, intra- or inter-city). I’ve spent a lot of Shabbatot with my family or on seminars, where we observe and therefore don’t use technology. Yom Kippur: the world stopped. I mean it. Lag B’Omer: this existed? After ga...

Life on a new shore. From Beach to Beach. So I’m a bit late on the news here, but I have some exciting to share: I’m staying in Israel an extra six weeks! I will be here until mid-August! Yes, you read that right. While I have no idea what the fall will bring, or an exact date of going home (mid-August-ish), I at least know what I am doing immediately following the end of Israel Teaching Fellows. If I’ve talked to you recently, you know how big a deal this is for me. Torah), Hebrew, and. Shortcuts Throug...

Bowling: Israeli Style | From Beach to Beach
https://beachtobeach.wordpress.com/2011/12/28/bowling-israeli-style
Life on a new shore. From Beach to Beach. Surprisingly, or not? The bowling alley was pretty typical. In fact, it was actually kind of nice, especially compared to some of the places I’ve bowled back in Jersey. In fact, you can take a look right here:. The bowling alley in Jerusalem. I especially love the stars and stripes on the far wall, about where we were. Overall, the experience was rather similar to every bowling experience I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot of them. Bowling without clown shoes?

A Most Effective Way to Remember and Commemorate | From Beach to Beach
https://beachtobeach.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/siren
Life on a new shore. From Beach to Beach. A Most Effective Way to Remember and Commemorate. This morning, I had one of the most meaningful experiences of my time in Israel so far. I should update this blog about Purim (aka Halloween on crack for three days), or my first this year in Jerusalem Pesach, and my trip to Jordan… and maybe one of these days I will. Instead, I’m going to write about Yom HaShoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day. In Judaism, we say a special prayer, the. ברוך אתה יי אלהטנו מלעך הסלמ.

https://beachtobeach.wordpress.com/2012/01/28/its-been-5-months-already
Life on a new shore. From Beach to Beach. It’s Been 5 Months Already? Can you believe I’ve been here 5 months? But she was here and in Tel Aviv right before she left, so I went to hang out with her for an evening. I am SO glad I did. It was truly a blessing to be able to just be in Israel with someone who has shared so much of my Jewish experience growing up. That’s something special. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window).
