Most of the original members were Island Heights residents- Elizabeth Hughes, Jean Keir, Jano Taber, Irene Pearce, and Roberta Ellis, Florence M. Johnson of Cranmoor Manor was also a founding member. Expansion brought the need for a larger meeting place for planned programs, for conducting business and for fund raising for a future home! Reprinted from the Island Heights Centennial booklet.

Each of these walking tours leads you around a section of Island Heights describing the history of the town. The Camp Meeting Tour includes the original camp meeting grounds on the bluff overlooking the Toms River; camp meeting cottages, original and renovated of the Methodist religious resort started in 1878; churches, past and present; the old firehouse, school and library.

A Brief History of Island Heights. Once a major waterway, the creek on the north side of Island Heights is what first made the island noteworthy to ships navigating into Toms River. In 1762 the Dillon family took ownership of the whole island, and the remains of their first house can be found within a much altered structure on the northeast section of the island. In later years it was divided into the Brinley, Hurry, and Westray farms.
