Island Weavings

Saturday, January 10, 2015. Photot of Harry Xul'si'malt Manson. 100 years after dying a tragic death in 1912. It is quite the story and the story spans over 100 years. It is a story of racism, a lost father, a recovering drug addict falling out of the sky, the finding of a grandfather, the restitution of his reputation and recognition on a national scale. The story has been covered by others: CBC news did a story which you can read here. And The Current did a show that you can hear here. In Toronto. ...

Island Weavings: The Secret of Cowichan Wool - the sheep

http://islandweavings.blogspot.com/2010/08/secret-of-cowichan-wool-sheep.html

Tuesday, August 10, 2010. The Secret of Cowichan Wool - the sheep. Washing fleece in Iceland. What did the early settlers and the Coast Salish women use for those amazing, warm, lightweight, sweaters? Today I was reading an older issue of Spin-Off. And came across an article written by Judith in which she provides the answer (MacKenzie McCuin, J. (2008). On Washing Fleece. Spin-Off Magazine, 32(3), 64-68.)! Have an even higher respect for Churro sheep (see and earlier post about Navajo churro. Judith's a...

Saturday, December 20, 2014. Photo: Liz H-K] A brisk November morning. With 12 volunteer happy hot hands for a photoshoot. I have been assisting my friend Norah Curtis of Norah Curtis Designs. With getting her hand made sweaters and mittens finished and ready for two big sale events, one in Calgary and the OneofaKind (that's how they spell it, really) annual show. Norah doesn't do anything half heart-ed and I mean anything (cooking, gardening, biking, etc.)! Photo: Liz H-K] And a pile of. It's been a whi...

Island Weavings: Too busy to post

http://islandweavings.blogspot.com/2012/03/too-busy-to-post.html

Friday, March 23, 2012. Too busy to post. Crazy 8 outrigger race]. Here we are almost a month since the last post. Life has been way too busy to take time to post. It's been go, go, go, for a few weeks straight and it has worn the body down to a head cold. Which is why I have time to post while at home recovering. Some thing to do with coal. Mining. Note the bike appearing. Tiny next to this, thing]. Oh, and did I mention the renovations? March 25, 2012 at 7:39 AM. Wowwhat a busy month. Yep.spinn...Oh Go...

My (post) sabbatical adventures: June 2013

http://mysabbaticaladventures.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Sunday, June 30, 2013. Letter to the Editor. A few months ago I wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper, the Delaware Gazette. It's a pretty small paper- or at least it seems that way to someone who grew up reading the Washington Post. But we subscribe because it covers items of local interest that the Columbus paper doesn't. So a few months ago, they covered an event around the opening of the film 42. Well, I got...

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Sunday, February 2, 2014. Silent poetry reading: Natasha Trethewey. I chose this poem because the topic of "home"- our theme in my freshman writing class as well as the women's literature class I'm teaching this semester- has been on my mind lately. Home and memory, and figuring out what those things are, keeps coming back in my own writing. Enjoy I hope you have occasion to read poetry. Every day, if possible. Why I Love Kni...

http://mysabbaticaladventures.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Friday, December 19, 2014. I make feminist toast nearly every morning. Well, technically, it's feminist English muffin. Years ago, when I was a young feminist, I saw an episode of a 1950s sitcom- something like Father Knows Best or Leave It to Beaver. You know, those idealized versions of life in the 1950s that were on endless syndicated repeat in the 1970s. Take that, patriarchy. I hope you enjoy a moment of rebellion today.

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Monday, April 8, 2013. Yesterday we turned off the furnace and opened the windows to welcome the first day we could- long awaited, it seemed forever ago that we'd smelled the air drifting through the rooms, felt it on our skin, remembered that it will slam the door to the study if strong enough. Only a few months and we have forgotten the habits of warm days, the way we are when the outside moves inside. May you enjoy spring.

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Friday, September 20, 2013. Report from the county fair. Where I grew up, we did not go to the county fair. I can't even recall if there was one. (There must have been, right? Aren't counties are required by law to have annual fairs? It just wasn't a thing we did, living in the suburbs of D.C. These guys were butting heads. Who do they think they are, goats? To claim good seats for the race. I've never felt so sick in my life!

My (post) sabbatical adventures: Happy new year!

http://mysabbaticaladventures.blogspot.com/2015/01/happy-new-year.html

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Thursday, January 1, 2015. It's January 1, 2015. We made it through another year, woohoo! In years past, I've thought about and wanted to do some of the traditional things a person does on December 31st and January 1st, but this year is the first time I've had the energy to do them. In this post I'll focus on the cleaning, which you're supposed to do on December 31st to get the old year out of the house. And my office went fr...

My (post) sabbatical adventures. The adventures continue even AFTER sabbatical! Wednesday, May 20, 2015. An explanation of sorts. I came to D.C. this past weekend for the Hawai'i Cultural Festival at the NMAI, and my goodness, it was wonderful! Part of all of this, too, is facing some questions that have come up in mid life (right on schedule, or maybe even a few years late). Nothing surprising: what does the next chapter look like, after retirement? Where will we live? What will I do? Today is my last d...
