After breakfast this morning we made our way to the ferry port where we caught a ferry over to the island of Heimaey, which is increasingly being marketed as ‘Pompeii of the North’ An island, like mainland Iceland, volcanic in origin and one which dates back 5,000 years. Day 4 – Wonderous Waterfalls 2. Seljalandsfoss. July 16, 2015. July 16, 2015. Our final visit on Day 4 was to Seljalandsfoss a waterfall which drops 60 metres over what was the former coastline. This waterfall has formed due to the process of rejuvenation. Deglaciation along the coast of Iceland led to melting of the ice caps and the old coastline has risen (isostatic uplift) leaving it raised above the present coastline resulting in the formation of Seljalandsfoss.
