Bird brained stories!: August 2005
http://birdbrainedstories.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 25, 2005. Yesterday morning, after arising at the surreal hour of 4am, I was privileged to see a bird that at one point numbered 15 in the world. The experience is one about which I've dreamed, to the point it made my list of 43 things to do. Yesterday, I got to watch the flight training of juvenile Whooping Cranes. I have been jealous of Ural ever since, but after yesterday, my green-eyed monster has been sufficiently fed. We were taken through an oak savannah restoration area that was ...

Bird brained stories!: November 2005
http://birdbrainedstories.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 26, 2005. Dreams of boreal species. Spending a few days in far northern Wisconsin to eat turkey and visit with in-laws, I had visions of Boreal Chickadees, Grey Jays, Redpolls, Crossbills, Bohemian Waxwings and any northern owls dancing in my head. What did I find? Let's see. A bunch of Black-Capped Chickadees and four Mourning Doves. That's it! I seem to have better luck staying right where I am, like I did before we left for the great white north. I was in the car right away. Sure en...

Carolina Ivorybills: Remote Recorders
http://carolinaivorybills.blogspot.com/2009/04/remote-recorders.html
Monday, April 06, 2009. I've always felt that one person searching in an area that most folks wrote off the list years ago is a shot in the dark at best. But you never know. Someone has to get struck by lightning now and then, right? One way to put the odds a bit more in my favor was to deploy remote recorders in the field. The trouble here is that CLO recorders. Are very pricey to rent. I have heard 8k$ If that's right that is way out of my budget. I think it sounds pretty good. I normalized the aud...

Carolina Ivorybills: August 2007
http://carolinaivorybills.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 31, 2007. The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated. Wellthings aren't quite that bad, but I have been absent from this blog and from the search for a bit. I've recently bought a house and that has kept me busy. And add to that an illness that kept me out of work and laid up for quite some time. Butthings are looking mucho better now. I'm itching to get back in the field! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.

Carolina Ivorybills: NE Cape Fear River - April 10
http://carolinaivorybills.blogspot.com/2009/04/ne-cape-fear-river-april-10.html
Monday, April 13, 2009. NE Cape Fear River - April 10. On Friday, I built a motor mount for my canoe. Now I can add an electric trolling motor so I can cover more distance in my searches. It turned out pretty well. It's hinged, so if I hit a stump or something, the motor can flip up and not be damaged. Forgive the pictures, I was carrying a little Canon A520.
