I was born on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. My mom, Izetta, was born in Tennessee and raised in Waterford, Virginia. My dad, Charles, was born in a small town outside of Leesburg, Virginia. Most of my aunts and uncles remained in Virginia. We would drive to the country every Sunday and had wonderful Sunday dinners with relatives. My mom would help cook in their big country kitchens. Nothing says comfort like southern food and......good ole' hospitality is truly a southern tradition.

Sunday, July 31, 2016. GRANDMOTHER WITH AUNT AND MOTHER. My grandmother, Annie Louise Middleton Markham with her daughters Stella and Izetta, (my mom on her lap). This photo was taken 1913 in Tennessee. FRENCH TOAST WITH BOYSENBERRY, CASSIS, and MAPLE SYRUP SAUCE. This is a delicious French toast to serve on a lazy Sunday morning. Add a couple strips of bacon, a glass of juice, and of course a good cup of coffee. If you don't have boysenberries, use blackberries or blueberries. C. 2 T unsalted butter.

Ale is a full bodied alcoholic drink that has been fermented in an open vessel using yeasts and malts that rise to the top of the brew. This type of fermentation gives ale a darker, fruitier, and spicier flavor than lagers and beers. The Cheddar Cheese Buttermilk Biscuits (next page) are a perfect accompaniment to this hearty stew. 3 lbs boneless beef chuck, cut into bite size chunks. 2 T grape seed oil.

Hominy is dried and ground white or yellow corn kernels from which the hull and germ have been removed. 2 thick tomahawk pork chops, trimmed of any excess fat.
