Generalísimo Brando: Zambia, One Year On
http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/01/zambia-one-year-on.html
If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. January 28, 2009. Zambia, One Year On. It's been almost 12 months since I left life in Lusaka. Pictured above (at right) is Derrick Sinjela, one of Lusaka's most determined journalists, holding a certificate of incorporation from the Zambian Government. As of November 2008, Derrick's vision for media development - what he calls the Rainbow Media Group - is a legal entity and can even be traded publicly on the Lusaka Stock Exchange. Professiona...

Generalísimo Brando: I'm peaking?!
http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/04/peaking.html
If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. April 13, 2009. I completed the last of my tortuously long Sunday runs yesterday. I feel less bad than I have some other Mondays - including one when I could barely walk to work - but even still, I have shooting pains in both legs, an aversion to anything resembling stairs and a trademark limp that I'd like to coin Runner's Hobble. I had a good 30 minute run today, and now I'm eating chocolate. Ha! April 13, 2009 at 9:16 PM.

Generalísimo Brando: Wanted: one World Cup travel partner
http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/05/wanted-one-world-cup-travel-partner.html
If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. May 21, 2009. Wanted: one World Cup travel partner. This past weekend I had a ridiculously good time in Toronto with Mike Li, an old friend from Laurier, and his roommate Jane. Though significantly hindered by tomfoolery, we started planning our trip to Southern Africa next year. As such, I have thought up some criteria that will hopefully help me identify and rate potential candidates. If you think you’re up to it, don’t hesit...I’d lik...

Generalísimo Brando: Marathon by the numbers
http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/04/marathon-by-numbers.html
If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. April 27, 2009. Marathon by the numbers. Time in hours, minutes and seconds it took to cover the 42.3km. Kilometres run in training. Pounds lost in the process. Dollars raised in support of St. John's Ambulance. Minutes it took to run an overzealous first 10k. Kilometres into the race when I hit the first 'wall'. Times I broke down and cried during kilometres 39 through 42. Senior citizens that breezed by me. Runners who finished ahead of me.

Generalísimo Brando: Too Hot for GV
http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/02/too-hot-for-gv.html
If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. February 10, 2009. Too Hot for GV. During a trip to Ottawa in November, I interviewed. For Governance Village. The India-born professor was, until recently, a long-time employee of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and held down foreign postings all over Asia, most notably in Afghanistan soon after the fall of the Taliban and at the beginning of Canada's development efforts there. Because poverty is one the root causes of co...

Lusaka Sunrise: Zambia: Music From the Official CIDA Intern Soundtrack
http://lusakasunrise.blogspot.com/2008/02/lusaka-music-from-official-cida-intern.html
February 8, 2008. Zambia: Music From the Official CIDA Intern Soundtrack. With an MP3 player, decent bandwidth, satellite radio and city full of people that are perpetually (sometimes annoyingly) listening to music, there's been a certain soundtrack to the intern experience. Below are the ones I know for sure; most Zambian songs blend together into one Nyanja/Bemba pop blob and I can’t be bothered to find out the track names of office gospel anthems. 1 MIA - "Paper Planes". 2 Akon - "Don't Matter". Polit...

Footloose and nothing fancy. The Dictionary of International Legal Jargonese. March 19, 2009. Made you do it. Made you say it. Really important. Like more important than washing your hands after peeing. Not as cool as it sounds. No creative cheating allowed. We mean it. Seriously, though. Admitting in advance to future cheating. Try not to cheat. Do what the treaty says, or else. Kind of like ending a gym membership because you’re overly self-conscious and afraid of the opinions of others. June 28, 2008.
