I was recently actually laughed at by a 24-year-old upper-middle-class suburbanite because after 36 years, I remain a "ham" radio operator and shortwave listener. He, of course, with his iPhone, XM satellite receiver, and DirectTV, considers my old-tech radio stuff obsolete and useless. Nobody does shortwave radio anymore" - really? Old highways and towns keep me on the back roads. Sunday, July 10, 2011. I rode with my friend Steve from Scooter In the Sticks. This weekend. We put on a few miles. Steve rides a Vespa most days, but today he had a Triumph Scrambler. On loan from Kissel Motor Sports. When I was looking for that first bike four years ago, the Scrambler topped my list. It's simple design embodied what I was looking for in a motorcycle. It still does. But that classic boxer engine of the old BMWs won out. Links to this post.

Introduction to 50 First Dates. Impromptu Cross Country Trip (the first post). Saturday, May 29, 2010. I made pretty good time yesterday afternoon, stopping right at sunset in Gothenburg, Nebraska. It had been windy, but when I hit North Platte, either the wind died down or the presence of trees lining the roadway made the trip much more pleasant. My new tent went up nicely, and I slept OK.
