Variations on a theme (2011). Dimensions : 15.7" x 24". This piece began with the mental shapes which I cut out using a template, which was then enlarged and used for the other shapes in the piece. Some were cut from fabric I made using a felting machine (embellisher). It incorporates beads, embroidery and quilting. This quilt is available for sale. Dimensions : 31" x 34.5". Owned by Dr Denise Coia. Thought block can be one of the symptoms of schizophrenia. The pattern and shifting colour shows how a person’s thoughts can be blocked and diminished by the illness. This quilt is available for sale. In the garden of the Snow Queen (2011). Dimensions : 12.6" x 14.2". Little blooms in the garden of the Snow Queen, but the snow and ice make up for this with their intricate patterns which make lace flowers. Felted wool centre embellished with lace, beads and embroidery stitches surrounded by crazy patchwork worked directly onto wadding, embellished with beads and embroidery stitches. And can it be (2008). St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cheriton, Folkestone, Kent. It hangs in St Andrew’s and is also part of the Creative Arts in Methodism index and available for exhibitions. This was a commissioned piece for the exhibition. Organised by West End ACTS, a forum of churches in Glasgow’s West End in 2008. It combines the idea although some people with a mental illness may be confined by mental health law, it is also possible to survive a ‘breakdown’ to break out of the constraints of mental illness and breakthrough to greater insights. I have had an interest in patchwork and quilting since I was five years old long before if became fashionable. Throughout my school and even university years it was that strange thing Jacqueline does which we don’t talk about much. This means I have seen fashions and styles come and go and I’ve tried lots!
