Land of Many Uses | Island-hopping

https://jakesiegel.wordpress.com/2008/03/03/land-of-many-uses

Exploring conservation in the Southwest. Land of Many Uses. March 3, 2008. I’m in Aldo Leopold country. Leopold ecologist, conservationist, hunter, author of the immortal A Sand County Almanac played a key role in the 1924 designation of the Gila National Forest as the country’s first wilderness area. For the past few days I’ve wound my way through Gila’s ponderosa pine forests on winding mountain roads, and Leopold’s been on my mind. And The Rewilding Institute. Since 1998, the Gila National Forest has ...

Exploring conservation in the Southwest. One Response to “About”. February 26, 2008 at 4:40 pm. I have enjoyed the first two blog entries immensely. Mr. Siegel has a lambent wit, and a eloquent grip on the biological pulse of the Southwest. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. The Crossing | Island-hopping

https://jakesiegel.wordpress.com/2008/02/26/the-crossing

Exploring conservation in the Southwest. February 26, 2008. Route 66, the famed highway running from Chicago to L.A., still glitters with neon and motels full of character and characters, but these days most travelers and truckers opt for the busy Interstates that sprang up alongside it. But Smith, co-chair of the Tijeras Canyon Safe Passage Coalition. Will hopefully see fewer accidents like the one that early morning. A collaboration between the city of Albuquerque, the New Mexico Department of Transpor...

Where the Wild Things Are | Island-hopping

https://jakesiegel.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/where-the-wild-things-are

Exploring conservation in the Southwest. Where the Wild Things Are. March 14, 2008. Alas, the wild wail of a wolf eluded me during several nights in the Gila National Forest. But decades after the last Mexican gray wolves were hunted to extinction in the Southwest, their howls once again echo across the rugged landscape. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s ambitious Mexican Wolf Recovery Program. And once again, the cow is causing problems for the wolf. But perhaps it’s not that simple. As Morgart t...

Come together | Island-hopping

https://jakesiegel.wordpress.com/2008/02/24/come-together

Exploring conservation in the Southwest. February 24, 2008. My man Mark Twain once observed that in the West, whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting over. As a student of journalism and literature, I was itching to see a fight; conflict is the root of a good story, and that’s what I came here to find. But instead of a barroom brawl in the Wild West, I observed something else yesterday. That is the question. So the Southwestern New Mexico Stakeholder Group was formed, where everybody had a seat...

Winging It: Off the Beaten Track

http://traciangel.blogspot.com/2008/03/off-beaten-track.html

A journalist by trade penetrating her way through this new storytelling vehicle. Monday, March 17, 2008. Off the Beaten Track. We put down the Frommer's and headed to less-touristy Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans' for a day with Hands On New Orleans. The city's rebuilding efforts are evident. We ended up hunched in a hot elementary school hallway scalping old paint for seven hours. Our hands throbbed. Our fingers kept a claw-like shape until manually straightened. A journalist by trade penetrating her way through this new storytelling vehicle. Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Memphis Barbecue meets Tennessee Basketball. We elbowed our way through the trash talk to the Rendevous Room - it was to be a pilgrimage for Jason. It was packed. http://traciangel.blogspot.com/2008/03/death-in-new-orleans.html

A journalist by trade penetrating her way through this new storytelling vehicle. Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Death in New Orleans. Death sleeps in New Orleans, tucked in with a jazz funeral lullaby. It seems only appropriate to talk about the town's tethering to the spirit world before examining its modern soul and rebuilding following Katrina. Marie Laveau's remains lay within a plaster tomb in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Her grave. Is one of the most visited in the United States. Death in New Orleans.

Winging It: Saints March In

http://traciangel.blogspot.com/2008/03/saints-march-in.html

A journalist by trade penetrating her way through this new storytelling vehicle. Saturday, March 1, 2008. I will never comprehend the loss of human life nor the sheer hell residents along the Gulf Coast faced over those days. I, like many others, have only my limited, yet vivid, experiences of New Orleans. So many stories — both real and myth — to tell. Hurricane. That word meant something entirely different the last time I was in New Orleans. Where else could you chase a muffaletta with a beignet? Where...

AF201 Animation

Monday, 21 November 2011. Stop Motion Olympic Rings? So I was trying to thing of something I could use as Olympic rings for one of my animations, and happened to come across this on Wikipedia. Sunday, 20 November 2011. Nice lil bit of ascii art (added by myself). I like this style of animation, not so much the jerky movements (as some wouldn't even consider it an animation) but the idea that characters can be so simple in design, and still resemble the human form despite not having any arms or legs.

Island-hopping | Exploring conservation in the Southwest

Exploring conservation in the Southwest. A tale of two Wests, Part II. March 31, 2008. This land is my land. Tom Waddell is weary. The manager of Ted Turner’s Armendaris Ranch isn’t anywhere close to retirement, even though he’s been working God’s country for decades. No, he’s not physically tired; he still oversees efforts such as building towns for the prairie dogs the ranch is trying to nurse back to health. It just depends on how fast they go by. We can test methodology faster out here first before i...
