Wildlife – Living Dubois

82513 WY: This is the life! Living in Dubois: What Could Be Sweeter? City Girl Spends Holiday Week in Winter Wilderness Wonderland. Holidays in the city were crowded with strangers and the nerve-jangling noise of false holiday cheer in background music. Here, there was the crunch of snow, and abundant visits from animals we seldom see, who for a change came down to where we live. This was the second Audubon Christmas bird count in the area; another one took place a week before Christmas. Three ducks, who...

The Place Where People Fall in Love. 8220;I just fell in love.” I can’t count how often the story ends in those four words, when I ask people how they came to be in Dubois. Sometimes “we” is substituted for “I.”. Joe and his wife were rounding the corner at the main intersection for the first time when one of them said, “This looks like a good place to retire.” And so they did. What is it about this place? 82513 WY: This is the life! Living in Dubois: What Could Be Sweeter? Remote Shopping: Spending (and Saving) in Dubois. How do we get what we need or can’t resist? Count the ways …. We had to deliver some boxes of documents to a friend in Oklahoma, which gave me the chance to revisit a guilty pleasure: Wasting time in big box stores. Now, what to do with the old ones? I could just donate them to the Op Shop. It’s fun to wander these virtual “aisles,” just to see what’s on offer, fr...Not long ago, some ch...

82513 WY: This is the life! Living in Dubois: What Could Be Sweeter? Musings about an old name, and changes in communication. One of the many myths about Dubois is that the town originally applied to the US Postal Service to name itself “Neversweat,” and was refused. Charming, but not exactly true. According to the definitive oral history by Esther Mockler. The Senator who served the Wyoming Territory on the Postal Service didn’t like the proposal, and named the town after himself. But still …. 8220;I don’t know what it is,” Andrea said to me the other day. “There’s just something about it. You get out there and you just feel happy.”. 82513 WY: This is the life! Living in Dubois: What Could Be Sweeter? Why I’m Dreaming of a Wild Christmas. A cowboy, not a fashion model, it sucks it up and holds on. Here’s our first Christmas tree in Dubois. It’s anything but perfect: a bit lopsided and tippy, with lots of gaps between branches and not many of those in the first place. We had to run two guy-lines away from the trunk to keep it stable. 8221; he called out from close behind me. For the first time in my decade here, I had a scintilla of u...

82513 WY: This is the life! Living in Dubois: What Could Be Sweeter? Dubois One Year After the Fire: Busy Re-storing. Last year this time, fire devastated downtown Dubois WY. Something beautiful is about to rise from the ashes. Thanks to Joe Brandl for picture. Prepare yourself when you turn that corner, a friend warned me last January as we neared Dubois on our return from the holidays. As many across the nation heard on the news last December 31, a huge fire had broken out in the center of Dubois.

Jakey's Rants

One mans fight against a world gone mad , my personal views on things in the news . You may not agree but I hope to give you something to think about. Sunday, October 10, 2010. Detox Diets are a Waste of Money. No two companies seem to use the same definition of ‘detox’. Little, and in most cases no, evidence was offered to back up the detox claims. They range in price from £1-2 for a detox drink to £36.95 for detox bath accessories. Today, as the dossier is published, many of the scientists involved - i...

A 'Jakey' Sanctuary | No Country for Old Men

A 'Jakey' Sanctuary. No Country for Old Men. Meet Colonel T. Parker. A Hint of Dickens. August 5, 2012. No doubt I’ve given the impression that the Jakey Sanctuary is a place of manic activity. It often is but it can also be a haven of tranquillity. Today is one of those times. On my way back from the village I can see the Sanctuary in the distance and notice a car parked outside; I have a visitor. And tagged Charles Dickens. Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer. Tails From The Dog Side. Just random scraps from the bottom of the dog bowl. Monday, November 11, 2013. That time of year when everything about our normal day to day routine gets turned pooper over sniffer. Not the least of which is a fat guy in a red suit coming down the chimney and getting us in trouble if we bark at him.
