My Journal – I'm James
http://james.wanless.info/journal
This is everything I've written over the past few years which I've bothered keeping. Depending on where I go with my writing and this site, a major cull or change could transpire. The further back you go, the more boring it may become. Proceed at your own risk, and with extreme caution. April 8, 2017. April 5, 2017. April 4, 2017. This began as a summary of the IA Summit, which I attended the weekend before last. However, after you take enough notes at enough 30-45 minute sessions, you end up with a ...

The place where I occasionally write. Technology & Design. Blogging renovation part 2: Middle. July 6, 2015. October 6, 2015. In my first post about our renovations. The only thing I can say at the outset is that it’s going a little bit more slowly than we would have liked, but there are some unavoidable factors, which I’ll highlight next. If nothing else, at least some of the issues are due to diligence on the part of the contractor and I’d never say that’s a bad thing. The scope and timeline. The den, ...

The place where I occasionally write. Technology & Design. Blogging renovation part 1: Genesis. May 24, 2015. October 6, 2015. I don’t want to go into a massive scope description and detail here, so I’ll just post a pic or two of each room with a little information. I’m hoping I’ll capture the renovations at three or four key stages for comparison and progress. The kitchen and den. Everything but the dog will be tiled over. Everything but the appliances to be updated. A little extra flooring. Finally, wi...
2015 Scotia Half race report | james.wanless.info
http://james.wanless.info/2015/06/29/2015-scotia-half-race-report
The place where I occasionally write. Technology & Design. 2015 Scotia Half race report. June 29, 2015. October 6, 2015. This will be a very short race recap. Originally, I’d wanted to focus on a few key half marathons and work hard to get my time back under 1:30. I had a pretty good start to that with the First Half. As you can see from my tentative plans back in March. I dragged my tired, old, injured, untrained carcass to UBC, arriving about a half hour before the start. Age Group: 14/159 (8%). Next u...
A long overdue update | james.wanless.info

The place where I occasionally write. Technology & Design. A long overdue update. May 31, 2015. July 20, 2016. And now, without further adieu …. In December I averaged about 45k per week running and was happy when I was up 50-55k per week for January. In fact, everything was good through the Pacific Road Runners First Half. At the end of June (4 weeks today as of this writing), I managed a nasty calf strain which pretty much completely sidelined my running for a month. Aside from getting new pads on my w...

Steve's Running Den: Race Report: MEC Race Series 10k - Race Three
http://runracereportrepeat.blogspot.com/2014/04/race-report-mec-race-series-10k-race.html
Tuesday, 15 April 2014. Race Report: MEC Race Series 10k - Race Three. Chip Time - 37:49. Overall - 5 / 246. M - 5 / 124. Shoes - Brooks Pure Connect 2. I’m not gonna lie, I’m surprised by this finish time. I knew I had a personal best in me going in to the race, and was pretty confident a sub-40 would be possible, but a sub-38 was wayyy beyond where I thought I could push myself. (My previous “official” PB being last year’s 42:36 Longest Day 10k. Heading for finish line - Photo by Leah. Still find that ...

Steve's Running Den: East Side 10k | September 13 | Vancouver
http://runracereportrepeat.blogspot.com/2014/10/east-side-10k-september-13-vancouver.html
Tuesday, 14 October 2014. East Side 10k September 13 Vancouver. Chip Time - 37:58. Overall - 43 / 1461. 45-49 - 3 / 71. M - 35 / 694. Shoes - Brooks Pure Connect 2. The East Side 10k was my 2nd 10k for the year and I wasn’t expecting any revelations in my finish time. I ran a strong PB of 37:49 on the very flat MEC 10k Fast Blaster in April and this course is much hillier. I just wanted to get in another race before Victoria Marathon to test my fitness and this fell about month before. 3rd in your age gr...

http://runracereportrepeat.blogspot.com/2014/10/goodlife-victoria-marathon-october-12.html
Tuesday, 14 October 2014. Goodlife Victoria Marathon October 12, 2014. Chip Time - 3:11:07. Overall - 86 / 1565. 45-49 - 14 / 116. M - 75 / 791. Shoes - Brooks Pure Flow (Red). I had put pretty big expectations on myself for this race. Having run a strong PB of 3:04 in May at BMO Vancouver Marathon I was hoping to build on that and really wanted a 3:00 on the books. Mostly, I was working towards a vaunted velvet smoking jacket. I just found from Reid Coolsaet's coach. It was great to see Alan and Melissa...

Friday, 31 May 2013. Race Report - Iron Knee 2013. M4049 – 12/20. Overall – 71/166. Brooks Pure Grit 2. Every race has it’s lessons, some more than others. A few things I learned from last weekend’s Iron Knee trail race:. 1) I really need to get out on the trails more (I’ve only been on technical trails once in the last 6 months and broke my elbow). . 2) Trails are a full body workout. 3) I did better than I expected, considering lack of trail training. . Was a lot of fun. Met up with. Sunday, 12 May 2013.

Tuesday, 14 October 2014. Siskiyou Out Back (SOB) 50 Miler July 2014 Ashland, OR. Brooks Pure Grit 2. Spoiler alert: Yes, I finished. With this goal in mind I came into 2014 with the goal of getting much more weekly mileage in. From most of what I had read and overheard, the best preparation for ultra distances is to get in solid mileage at an easy (zone 1) pace and to try and train on race specific terrain as much as possible. We made a trip of it, stopping in Portland to visit Powell’s Books and ...

Saturday, 10 May 2014. Race Report: BMO Vancouver Marathon 2014. Brooks Pure Connect 2. Even though I officially BQd (Boston Qualified) last year, this race is a breakthrough for me. My BQ was actually somewhat anticlimactic as Greg. Pointed out some time after BMO last year that I would be a year older in 2014 and thus meet the 45-49 3:25 qualifying time. The weather was super clear and getting warm in the week leading up but the forecast showed it cooling with rain for race day. As nice as the weat...

Wednesday, 16 October 2013. Race Report - Victoria Marathon 2013 - DNS. My second ever DNS (Did Not Start). My first was last fall, I had bad case of the flu prior to the Bellingham Trail Marathon. I was doing the last clinic session with my marathon clinic, doing some speed work around False Creek. Flat, flat False Creek. My legs had been tired all week and I really wasn't paying attention. As we went into another speed interval I clipped my toe and went chest first, sliding along the seawall. The plan ...

A number of reasons are adduced here for the failure of Emperor Maximilian I to achieve a settlement with his adversary Charles, duke of Guelders, in the long drawn out war for possession and mastery of Guelders. James Burrage at WebKanix. A personal weblog from James Burrage on media, technology and web development. Posted: Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 1:40 pm. Recently I’ve been working with a community broadcaster and one of the questions I’m often asked is “What happens to you when they switch off analogue radio in 2012? The new radio doesn’t suffer the same problems as the factory unit - namely that Longwave and Medium wave are now interference free. I now listen to RTE Radio 1 on 252LW in the ca...Indeed,...
