The Gibson L-0 and L-1. Top, sides and back. One of the factors in the great sound of the original 1926-1929 Gibson L-0 and L-1 guitars is their very thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Probably utilized as a cost-cutting measure, this minimal finish was flexible enough to vibrate with the wood and allowed the wood to "breathe" in tonal terms. This finish has an entirely different look than the much thicker finishes that Gibson applied to their guitars in the thirties and forties.

The Gibson L-0 and L-1. Top, sides and back. All the little bits and pieces it takes to complete a guitar. Kerfing is the (roughly) triangular, slotted strips of wood used to attach the top and back of a guitar to the sides. I cut all of my kerfing myself, in order to ensure quality and historical accuracy. On any given guitar, I use either maple or mahogany kerfing, depending on the body and top woods. The Gibson L-0 and L-1. Top, sides and back. Gibson used white plastic to bind their L-series guitars. Some of the L-0 examples I've seen had binding on the top only. I've seen one 1927 L-1 with B/W purfling. That same L-1 also had a bound fingerboard. The only inlay on the original L-series guitars was the pearl dots on the face of the fingerboard and the plastic dots on the side. Even the logo on the headstock was silk screened paint, not inlaid.
