Seen by Combined Ops as the most efficient solution to the problem of knocking out St Nazaire's great dock, this plan fell foul of the Admiralty's desperate need of convoy escorts, and it was only with great difficulty that even the ramming destroyer was secured, leaving the slack to be taken up by much smaller and more vulnerable ships of His Majesty's Coastal Forces. To ensure sufficient deck space, a total of eighteen 'Little Ships' would take part in the raid, sailing into action in two columns.

Reconstruction below, the addition of the blockhouses can be seen to render the Mole virtually unassailable from the sea - which begs the question why, in the planning, was the frontal attack not coordinated with an assault from the rear, utilizing troops scheduled to land in the Old Entrance?

A superanuated destroyer which, in the deep twilight of an otherwise undistinguished career, still managed to bring her very own version of 'shock and awe' to the supposedly impregnable U-Boat base of St-Nazaire, France. Constructed for the US Navy by the Bath Ironworks, of Bangor, Maine, she, as DD131, the USS BUCHANAN. This image of Campbeltown.
