Sunday, June 28, 2015. I'm doing something I haven't done before - experimenting with my craft, rather than producing work for exhibition and sale. I starting this new process by playing with some ideas about how I go about my tradecraft. This work draws on the Flemish many layered process that includes the dark warm ground, verdaccio/grisaille, piambura (dead layer) and houding (red/green warm/cool shaping). For the grisaille I'm trying Payne's Grey : - It just feels more contemporary (so far).

Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Ginger Bread and Pepper Nuts. The last few months of 2010 were pretty much a paint-free time for me. I really struggled to find motivation to pick up a brush; but I spent my time refining my Gingerbread and Pfeffernüsse recipes. Artists are communicators and it's very hard to always feel like you're talking to yourself. We are silenced. Saturday, July 18, 2015. Starting to apply the warmer flesh tones using Alizarin, Cad Red, Italian Pink and Zinc White. It's still far too pale and evenly toned, although the Zinc White is really coming into its own. Will let this get a bit tackier and then really amp up the warm tones and build in some blues. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. So this is an underpainting I did about 6 or 7 years ago from a series I never exhibited. I want to try for the layers that develop skin tone and intensity of colour but fewer and much looser. 2 large loose tonal paint application. 3 Building the pentimenti and tonal colour. After toning the panel, the composition was mapped out. This photo shows the sky painted and the mountains blocked in. Where the tree trunks were in the initial composition was largely obliterated when the sky and mountains were painted. That's OK. They're easy enough to find again.
