Going where other designers fear to tread. Language: Learning Kanji as an Adult vs. Child. June 14, 2015. If you’ve ever taken an interest in Japanese, you will know there are 3 writing systems; Hiragana, a phonetic ‘alphabet’ for native words; Katakana, a phonetic ‘alphabet’ for loan words; and the mystical Kanji, pictograms knicked from Chinese that hold multiple meanings and pronouciations. 8211; the everyday Kanji agreed by the Government and used in newspapers. Learning Kanji is about both. And this...

Going where other designers fear to tread. Category - JET Programme. Japan: Final Farewell Thoughts. February 9, 2016. No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. Lin Yutang. Sitting at my desk, on my last day of school, I can’t help but recall all the major ‘lasts’ from my life; Uganda, Placement Year, University, and how recent, yet distant; big but now small they all seemed. It’s been quite cathartic to write farewell letters to the...

Going where other designers fear to tread. Language: Japanese Language Proficiency Test N5. July 6, 2015. So I finally made my way into the Kingdom of Geekdom and have attempted to join the ranks of foreigners scrabbling to climb the dizzying heights of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test ranks, starting right at the bottom with level 5. Edit: I passed the N5! Originally this what a much longer and detailed post, but since WordPress crashed and lost it, please enjoy this shortened version). Even when ...

Going where other designers fear to tread. Kitakyushu: In 24 hours. March 30, 2015. Heading to Kitakyushu, my hopes weren’t too high after hearing it was mostly an industrial wasteland but my fears were mostly unfounded. Travelling in, we wrongly headed towards Moji Port, an area of apartments with occasional red brick buildings. Looking at the station, it had none of the promised retro styling; it was at this point I became suspicious and realised we actually wanted to be in Mojiko Ko as in old! The Kan...

Going where other designers fear to tread. Change Places: The chaos of April in Japan. April 1, 2015. As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but think of the scene in Alice in Wonderland wherein at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, all guests are required to get up and change places! It’s April 1st, and whilst on the one hand that means pranks and tricks, in Japan it also marks the day when the influx of new teachers arrive at the school, and each teacher picks up their stuff and moves desks in the staff room.

Going where other designers fear to tread. Language: Why Learning a Language is like Freestyle Rap. June 15, 2015. So when camping the other weekend, at around 1am, whilst Karl lay down a sweet beat, the group started freestyle rapping, and it got me thinking; Learning a language is a lot like Freestyle Rap. Spitting lines and verses, you think I rehearse this? So what do I mean? I guess in native conversation, within the realms of the metaphor, the routes are well worn by the mouse, and it simply follow...

Going where other designers fear to tread. Golden Week ’15: Siem Reap, Cambodia. May 20, 2015. Siem Reap, whilst not the capital of Cambodia, is definitely its cultural and spiritual capital centre, thanks to the. UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Angkor Wat; the biggest religious monument in the world (apparently) but it definitely is pretty! Taking over the Mad Monkey. In what would be a common theme at this hostel, the staff were competent, yet unwelcoming, and took us up to our dormitory. The tuk tu...
