Survey Methods Musings: December 2014
http://jameswagnersurv.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Blogging about survey methods, responsive design, and all things survey related. Friday, December 12, 2014. Context and Daily Surveys. I've been reading a very interesting book. On daily diary surveys. One of the chapters, by Norbert Schwarz, makes some interesting points about how frequent measurement might not be the same as a one-time measurement of similar phenomena. Friday, December 5, 2014. Device Usage in Web Surveys. This trend makes sense to me. I can do many/most things from my phone. I...I did...
Survey Methods Musings: May 2015
http://jameswagnersurv.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Blogging about survey methods, responsive design, and all things survey related. Friday, May 29, 2015. From average response rate to personalized protocol. Researchers have since looked at subgroup response rates. Also interesting, but assuming that these rates are a fixed characteristic leaves us helpless. Now, it seems that we have begun working with an assumprton that there is heterogenous response to treatments and that we should, therefore, tailor the protocol and manipulate response propensities.
Survey Methods Musings: September 2014
http://jameswagnersurv.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Blogging about survey methods, responsive design, and all things survey related. Friday, September 26, 2014. Web Panels vs Mall Intercepts. I saw this interesting article. That just came out. It called to my mind a talk that was hosted here a few (8? Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Idenitfying all the components of a design, again. In my last post I talked about identifying all the components of a design. At least identifying them is an important step if we want to consider randomizing them. Of co...I fir...
Survey Methods Musings: Is the "long survey" dead?
http://jameswagnersurv.blogspot.com/2015/05/is-long-survey-dead.html
Blogging about survey methods, responsive design, and all things survey related. Friday, May 29, 2015. Is the "long survey" dead? A colleague sent me a link to a blog. Arguing that the "long survey" is dead. The blog takes the point of view that anything over 20 minutes is long. There's also a link to another blog. In my world 20 minutes is still a short survey. But the point is still taken. There has been some research. Matrix sampling is another useful approach that is little used. It seems like yo...
Survey Methods Musings: February 2015
http://jameswagnersurv.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Blogging about survey methods, responsive design, and all things survey related. Friday, February 13, 2015. Adaptive Designs and Incentives. I've been working on a paper about an incentive experiment that we did. It raised some interesting issues. And made me recall one of my favorite papers. Trussell and Lavrakas. There are all sorts of ethical and procedural issues with offering differential incentives that make it difficult to carry out in practice, but I still think this is a neat example. I had the ...

Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Are we ready for a single-frame cell phone survey design?
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2012/12/are-we-ready-for-single-frame-cell.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Saturday, December 15, 2012. Are we ready for a single-frame cell phone survey design? It feels as if in this rapidly changing social and technological environment, surveys methods are merely trying to catch up with changes. It took a while for RDD telephone surveys to incorporate cell phone numbers. It took more time for researchers to use sample optimization formulas for allocation of sample across frames. Why could this be the case? View my complete profile. James Wagne...
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Are We Done Yet?
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2010/02/are-we-done-yet.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Saturday, February 13, 2010. Are We Done Yet? Commonly, surveys have a target number of interviews, together with a target response rate. The number of interviews can be determined by a desired precision of survey estimates based on variance assumptions. Most surveys have multiple objectives, producing numerous estimates and even types of analysis. But what if a survey has a focal objective, such that survey data collection can be geared towards that objective? I am a Rese...
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Consequences of Survey Nonresponse
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2012/11/consequences-of-survey-nonresponse.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Thursday, November 29, 2012. Consequences of Survey Nonresponse. I was asked to write a paper on the consequences of unit nonresponse in surveys ( http:/ ann.sagepub.com/content/645/1/88. I did a simple analysis for this paper that I found particularly intriguing. While a meta-analysis by Groves and Peytcheva found lack of association between nonresponse rates and nonresponse bias across. View my complete profile. The Cost of a Call Attempt. Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Is this a cell phone, a landline, or both? The demise of landlines as a technology?
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2013/07/is-this-cell-phone-landline-or-both.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Is this a cell phone, a landline, or both? The demise of landlines as a technology? Currently, Random Digit Dial (RDD) telephone surveys can field samples from the landline and from the cell phone frames (sets of exchanges assigned to either service). The interviewers could confirm with the respondent whether they have reached a landline or a cell phone, and assign them to the correct stratum for weighting and estimation. Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: The Three Sampling Distributions of Polls ... and Surveys?
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-three-sampling-distributions-of.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. The Three Sampling Distributions of Polls . and Surveys? I just listened to a pollster describe polls relying increasingly more on art than science. Decisions on how to identify likely voters, how to weigh the data, etc. And it made me think: could we not quantify the Art part so that it becomes Science? View my complete profile. Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Mail vs. Telephone; ABS vs. RDD
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2010/02/mail-vs-telephone-abs-vs-rdd.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Friday, February 19, 2010. Mail vs. Telephone; ABS vs. RDD. The telephone survey methodology conference II and the resulting book, Advances in Telephone Survey Methodology, have shown problems and solutions to the use of random-digit-dialing (RDD) and telephone to conduct surveys. Others have used growing challenges with RDD, both cost and coverage related, as arguments for the use of entirely new approaches to current studies. A guess would be "not much." Further rese...
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Missed Opportunities to Make Use of Large Scale Survey Experiments
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2013/03/missed-opportunities-to-make-use-of.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Missed Opportunities to Make Use of Large Scale Survey Experiments. Unfortunately, the data from these large scale methodological experiments are usually not publicly released. This is not through inadvertent oversight. At a minimum, there is cost associated with preparing and releasing data files - resources that are needed on the particular survey being redesigned. It does make me wonder if external research funding could be dedicated to making d...
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog: Computation of Response Rates in RDD Telephone Surveys
http://andypeytchev.blogspot.com/2011/11/computation-of-response-rates-in-rdd.html
Andy's Survey Methodology Blog. Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Computation of Response Rates in RDD Telephone Surveys. Suppose you are interested in examining the fat-free food items in Target. You can quickly screen out the clothing and furniture items by taking a quick look. You may then go to the food department and look at the labels on all the items whether they are fat-free. Some will be, some will not, and a third set you will not be able to establish (maybe they are out of reach.). AAPOR provides a...
