Hundreds of mud caked, exhausted and fraught looking people hurling themselves over an enormous curving wall. Some at the top heroically help others over, still more slide limply to the bottom after yet another failed attempt. What terrible event could have caused this to happen? A breakdown in the social order? The Sun stopping to shine? The Earth's core ceasing to rotate?

The high rises of Surfers Paradise at first glance are more Malaga than Milan. Yet The Palazzo sits snuggly butted up against a shopping mall sporting luxury brands and an 80 berth marina for yachts of all sizes and is full of Chinese tour parties either checking in or checking out the signature fragrance. Cant work out why people like it!

Thursday, October 21, 2010. Swimming with sharks is something special. Anyone who dives falls in love with them. The special delicately poised moment when you see your first shark underwater, usually a lone white tipped reef shark less than a meter long is to start a life long connection to the one of the most maligned animals on earth and unfortunately some of the most endangered. Grey Reef with feed bin visible. The bin contains tuna heads. Sharks frenzy once the lid of the bin is released.

Sunday, May 27, 2012. Killing time at Shucked, Newstead. Cold Drip Coffee @ Shucked. Happily, that's where most of the similarity ends at this actually quite cheerful coffee shop / cafe. The location, amongst the industrial units and building sites of soon to be trendy apartments might be reminiscent of a crime scene, but it's a cracking little spot for brunch of a weekend and I imagine crammed by local business for lunch during the week. My heart aching for countryside and, more importantly, a good pint of cider. 4 free-range chicken breasts (don’t insult the dish with unhappy meat). A couple of handfuls of chestnut mushrooms, sliced. 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped. 189; red onion, roughly chopped. 189; pint chicken stock (if you can make your own, here’s a great recipe. Enough pastry to cover a 30cm pie dish (a deep one). A sprig of fresh rosemary.

Tuesday, 15 June 2010. Spiced Mackerel and Dhal. For the Spiced Mackerel. 4 mackerel fillets (locally line caught if possible). 1 tbsp ground tumeric. Squeeze of lemon juice. 225g red or yellow lentils. 1 red onion, finely chopped. 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped. 2 chicken stock cubes (or vegetable if you prefer). 1 tsp chilli powder. 1 tsp ground coriander. 1 tsp ground cumin. 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped. 500g new potatoes, cooked and sliced. 4 handfuls of okra, tipped.

Monday, 25 January 2010. 100g (4oz) self raising flour. 1 teaspoon baking powder. 25g (1oz) caster sugar. 125ml (4fl oz) milk. Drop of sunflower oil, for greasing. Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl, add the sugar and salt and stir to mix. Make a well in the centre, crack in the egg and whisk, gradually drawing in the flour from the edge.
