Exploring Australia over the Holidays. After an intense fall semester at school, my planned visit to Australia was a welcome gift. This was my first time to the continent and opportunity to visit friends I've been wanting to see for years. Fortunately many of my friends are in the same area near Sydney, so that was my destination over the holiday break with excursions from this city. CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY. I attended an incredibly beautiful Christmas Eve service at St Andrews Cathedral. The nex...

Jamie's eJournal: October 2015

http://jamiesejournal.blogspot.com/2015_10_01_archive.html

History attests to the amount of European influence in Southeast Asia, also known as the age of colonialism. Beginning in the early 1500s. The Europeans at the time, referred to this territory as the East Indies. And its inhabitants simply as natives. Countries such as Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain and France made every effort to find new trade routes to China and saw the southeast as their ticket. Included is a map and propaganda from the early days of trading, some hundreds of years ago.

Jamie's eJournal: July 2015

http://jamiesejournal.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Heading to Canada for my annual summer break is more than an opportunity for me to connect with family and friends but also to reacquaint myself with 'familiarity'. I love living overseas with the constant learning of different cultures and even the occasional challenge it entails. My blog post from last September. Gives examples of what it is like for me to live in Thailand. Hence, it is refreshing in the midst of this to periodically reconnect with what is familiar. The family back then enjoyed a wonde...

Jamie's eJournal: Taronga Zoo

http://jamiesejournal.blogspot.com/2016/12/taronga-zoo.html

A good number of Australian friends recommended I visit the Taronga Zoo. Located on a part of Sydney Harbor. So I decided to take them up on their recommendation and am glad I did! Unfortunately I chose the hottest day of their summer season (40C) but I endured the day making sure I found as many breezes as possible, including the ceiling fan in the eating area =). The best way to get to the zoo is via ferry ride to the park and then Sky Ride. And a few pictures from the Rainforest and Reptile Trails.

Jamie's eJournal: Sydney's Hyde Park

http://jamiesejournal.blogspot.com/2016/12/sydneys-hyde-park.html

Just outside my hotel in Sydney is an open area called Hyde Park. Apparently this acreage was reserved by Gov Phillip. In 1792 for the then town of Sydney and named after the Hyde Park. I love learning the history of an area, no doubt in part to my education in Urban and Regional Design. Oh so many years ago. In my brief research, I learned this park was originally used for public sport and remained without grass or trees until 1854 when the Hyde Park Improvement Committee. 1832), nearby Lyons Terrace.

Jamie's eJournal: Developing the Colony

http://jamiesejournal.blogspot.com/2016/12/developing-colony.html

I would estimate that more people know that Captain Cook. An English explorer, discovered the continent of Australia in 1770 than the number of people who know how the country was developed since those early days. For instance, did you know that Australia was originally an island of convicts, made up of those who were convicted of often petty-crimes from across the British Empire between the late 17-1800s? The Hyde Park Barracks. As detailed on a Hyde Park Barracks web site:. Discovered Australia, their ...
