As Redmond had a reasonable commercial centre I took the opportunity to shop for a couple of bits and pieces – exciting things like toiletries, and tyre tubes! The occasional bicycle tourist. My favorite photo’s. Washington DC – the essentials. Day 89 to Harrisburg – 75 miles. I cycled on highway 126 through Eugene to Harrisburg rather than meander around the bypass roads that the Transam was routed along. This gave me a couple of hours to look around the very impressive University of Oregon campus. The road meandered along the very beautiful Mackenzie River, and although it was highway 126 it wasn’t too busy early in the morning. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

The first part was pleasantly downhill in the cool of the morning, then the next 30 miles was a less pleasant climb, but through spectacular basalt gorges, and the John Day fossil beds. Then a downhill finish into Mitchell. Mitchell on a Sunday ……. not a lot open! Looking towards the Painted Gorge. The Old Oregon Hotel. Day 84 to Prairie City – 67 miles. Day 86 to Prineville – 47 miles.

Enjoyed an early morning swim in the river before preparing breakfast. Porridge this morning, so the clean up took a little longer. I also wasn’t in a rush to leave and spent some time ‘chatting’ to Justine on the iPad before cycling off. Lots of log trucks on the road today – and this is why! Day 79 to Riggins – 51 miles. 102F when I arrived at just after midday.

Today was a long day, so got away early, and decided to use the Weisser River cycleway rather than the road. After the first mile it became apparent that the cycleway was better suited to mountain bikes, than laden tourers. However as we’d been advised of extensive roadworks on the main route I decided to persevere with the track in the hope it would improve. It didn’t! Fill in your details ...

Today could have been difficult starting as it did with a steep climb out of Halfway, and an equally steep descent, then 45 miles of climbing. As it turned out, there was a bit of cloud cover which kept the temperature down, and just about no wind. Early up this morning (5:15) – breakfast duty with Amy; so made porridge, put on coffee, set out the makings for packed lunch, then cleaned up. Everything was done by 6:45, and most of the group gone by 7:00, but I decided to stay for a while to appreciate the luxury of lounge chairs and a leisurely read of the daily paper.
