The following day started dark and early (bags retrieved at 5:30 AM) in order to clear Chinese security and take a commercial flight to Lhasa. On route to Chengdu, Jack (art and architecture) , Jim (political) and Paul (human rights) gave us detailed and excellent preparation for what we were about to see. Jim Rosenthal explained the historical conflicts between China and Tibet.

We arrived in Cairns from Samoa after another one of those six hour flights that feels like. Hour because it’s so full of activity. It was late afternoon. We immediately hopped on a bus from Cairns to Port Douglas, a little over an hour’s drive. The hotel, called the Sea Temple Resort and Spa in Port Douglas was outstanding. The décor was contemporary.
