Jan Elvin was born in Washington, D.C. in 1946 and raised in McLean, Virginia. She majored in foreign languages in college and later taught English in Valencia, Spain. She returned to this country to work with Ralph Nader's Public Citizen group, then went on to become founding editor and chief writer of the NPP Journal, a quarterly publication of the National Prison Project of the American Civil Liberties Union.
