THINGS THAT INTEREST, ENGAGE AND ENRAGE. August 16, 2016. They’re a Scream. His fortnightly diet of worms and other non-religious experiences. Aug 17, 2016. If the acquisitive cartel of private interests and public officials that really runs Bali wants to turn the island into Disneyland, it must be conceded (through gritted teeth) that they can. The electoral check on such excess is even more notional here than in other more functional democracies. We now hear, via the. Newspaper, a particularly vacuous ...

Guacamole Gulch: December 2014
http://guacamolegulch.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 31, 2014. The air is full of smoke; motorcycles are roaring up and down the streets. Fireworks are going off all around us down the beach, across to Nusa Penida. Earlier today, we saw the fireworks salesmen on the street, hawking their wares. It's quite a party. The good thing is that the celebration started at sundown - so even the early diners got to see a little of the action. I ordered the sauteed prawns. The cone o' rice appears frequently on plates here in Candidasa. Only two mo...

Guacamole Gulch: August 2015
http://guacamolegulch.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 21, 2015. Sepia Saturday 293: M'm M'm Good! Ould I like to own that Campbell's soup vending machine in the photo. But, that's not going to happen. The only one vaguely similar sold for $14,000 on eBay, well out of my price range. You'd be liable if the soup was too hot, sued if the opener hurt anyone and on and on. I hate to say it but they all look like they've just discovered the shock and awe of suppositories. Forgive my over-active imagination. Philadelphia Press and Evening Journal.

Guacamole Gulch: September 2014
http://guacamolegulch.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 29, 2014. Guide on the left; driver on the right. We saw monasteries in Lhasa; 4 of the major sights. My lasting impression of these structures is the number of stairs we had to climb. In the thin air, hauling myself uphill was difficult and I lagged behind and even skipped a couple of things due to excessive gasping. The monasteries have gorgeous locations with breath-taking views. Most of them are very colorful and have prayer flags fluttering all over. And this was the view from the ...

Guacamole Gulch: March 2015
http://guacamolegulch.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 30, 2015. We love the opening credits for the show with the elements Br for bromine and Ba for barium, highlighted - periodic table style. Here's a very clever poster with a unique BB periodic table incorporating the show's characters. What does breaking bad mean? The gingerbread men - Tighty Wightie Bites. Mr White, in the flesh, so to speak. Recurring Pink Bear Bites. Show fans know what this is. Warren Miller in New Yorker. Here's a new egg separator which acts like a pipette and sucks t...

Guacamole Gulch: June 2015

Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Sepia Saturday 286: Inle Lake. One of the most beautiful fishing spots I've ever seen is Lake Inle in Myanmar. There are all kinds of environmental problems occurring at this site, the most important being that the lake is filling in with dirt eroding from the surrounding hills. This problem and others are slowly being addressed. I'm posting from Oman on the last leg (pardon the pun) of a vacation so I'm keeping this short. Helen Killeen Bauch McHargue. Links to this post. Guacamole Gulch: Incantations
http://guacamolegulch.blogspot.com/2015/07/incantations.html
Wednesday, July 08, 2015. I studied this painting closely; I'm interested in the idea of witches and what they were cooking up. It's an overall grisly scene; the fat, ugly witches are engaged in various nefarious activities while some poor chump has just been hanged, dangling over the whole scene. Suddenly I noticed the witch in the middle left is looking at her iPad! She even has a stand like mine. Yikes, maybe that was Steve Jobs being channeled from 1646. But hold the eye of newt, for Heaven's sake.

Friday, May 29, 2015. Sepia Saturday: Julia's Kitchen. His week's prompt suggests kitchens, pies, colour slides. Pardon the Canadian spelling. La Pitchoune - you can rent it! Ahthe good old days. What a great guy! Debra taking the second chopping shift. After our delicious Balinese lunch, we escaped with no dish washing duty. I shudder to think of how the kitchen might have looked after preparing meals in 1896 when this dishwasher was offered for sale. Roast Chicken with Garlic, Shallots, and Potatoes.

Guacamole Gulch: January 2015
http://guacamolegulch.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 31, 2015. Peter Sellers and Burt Kwouk. My husband was cautious when I returned home on Friday. He was standing in the hallway and I went straight into my crouching dragon position. The cat ran away quickly after seeing the purpose and determination in my eyes. I looked Richard up and down, thinking to myself, "Soon I'll be able to take him down.". Am I too ambitious - am I shooting too high? Burt Kwouk today at 83. Helen Killeen Bauch McHargue. Links to this post. When we were kids and...
