Are We There Yet?: October 2015
http://janiefahey.blogspot.com/2015_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 25, 2015. This year there are a few changes with how some things take place during our school year, like parent-teacher conferences. In the past, we've had our first round of conferences just after the end of our first interim, only six weeks into the school year. What do you do to prepare for parent-teacher conferences? Sunday, October 18, 2015. Writing Workshop: Show Don't Tell. Once drafts were completed, students typed that draft using Google Drive. Then revisions began. Their...We re...

Are We There Yet?: September 2015
http://janiefahey.blogspot.com/2015_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 15, 2015. Today we celebrated International Dot Day and The Dot. After sharing the book, students drew their own dots. We then used the Quiver app to turn their one-dimensional dots into 3-D dots. Here are a few of my student's dots - before and after. What did you do to celebrate Dot Day? Sunday, September 6, 2015. First Inquiry Unit in US History and Technology. From there, we extended our group chat to continue throughout the year - it's fantastic! If you don't follow her - she's a ...
Are We There Yet?: January 2016
http://janiefahey.blogspot.com/2016_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Join the Slice of Life Tuesday @ Two Writing Teachers. This is my first time joining Slice of Life. I've committed to writing each and every day, so I thought I'd post in Slice of Life on day three of writing. I'm thinking how very hard it is to be a writer - not even a good writer, but just a writer. I ask my students to write daily. If I ask them to do it, why shouldn't I? I'm a mom who finally decided what I wanted to be when I grew up at age 38! View my complete profile.
Are We There Yet?: November 2015

Sunday, November 15, 2015. Project Work vs Project-Based Learning. I will not kid you. I struggled with what our speaker said. He indicated that in order to have a project unit that was worthwhile, it had to be solving a real-world problem. I chose to focus on my opening unit in social studies, exploration. My essential question was: How was the world changed by explorations of European nations? It was a fabulous experience. The faculty and students were incredibly welcoming and so willing to share t...

Teaching My Friends!: Abandoning Post-It Notes During Independent Reading
http://teachingmyfriends.blogspot.com/2015/07/abandoning-post-it-notes-during.html
Monday, July 13, 2015. Abandoning Post-It Notes During Independent Reading. I have been a long time user of Post-It note annotations during reading. In fact, I've written posts, like this one. For many of my students. Oh, there were a handful that got it and did well, but many seemed to struggle with using them in a way that helped them as readers. I knew it was time to rethink this. How effective was having my students use sticky notes during independent reading? Or My Big Campus. So, that's where thing...

As some of you know, I have lesson plans and student packets for 5th grade Social Studies that I share with people for free. (If you didn't know, but would like to, you can read about it HERE. Upper Grades Are Awesome: Back To School Read Aloud
http://www.uppergradesareawesome.com/2015/08/back-to-school-read-aloud.html
Saturday, August 1, 2015. Back To School Read Aloud. Well, as summer wound down I wanted to squeeze in one more teacher book (see my Summer Reading posts. For more great teacher books I read over the summer) and I chose reading guru Donalyn Miller's "Reading the the Wild". What a lovely book! It really invigorated me and reminded me of how important it is to foster a love of reading. Well, Frindle happened to be one of the trade books for 5th grade and so I knew that I'd finally have to read it. Frindle ...
Elementary Shenanigans: Set the Stage to Engage: SuperRoots!
http://www.elementaryshenanigans.com/2015/07/set-stage-to-engage-superroots.html
Set the Stage to Engage: SuperRoots! Warning: This is a long one. Break it into parts or dive in for the long haul! I promise it will be worth it.}. It's time for week #2 of my Set the Stage to Engage series. Last week was all about how I create an environment that enhances student engagement. How I "flip" my classroom and really get the students engaged and excited about tough content. You can read about that {HERE}. I still had so much content to teach, and I needed to knock this out. And fast! Instead...

Authentic Audiences for Student Writing |
http://4thgraderacers.blogspot.com/2015/07/authentic-audiences-for-student-writing.html
Authentic Audiences for Student Writing. In every writing training I have ever attended, or presented at for that matter, there is talk about giving students authentic audience for their writing. This is sometimes easier said than done, and can leave us searching for more than just a time to share in class. Check it out here. Who doesn't love a contest? Students get just excited as we do to enter a contest, and a writing contest is no different. I have never seen a student more ready to take my feedb...

O-H So Blessed!: Monday Made It >>>> Marquee Letter!
http://blessedinfirst.blogspot.com/2015/06/monday-made-it-marquee-letter.html
Monday, June 29, 2015. Monday Made It Marquee Letter! My first ever Monday Made It link up project! Except that I made this last Thursday. ha! A few weeks ago I was wandering through Hobby Lobby and happened upon these marquee letter light kits. I thought about how great they would like in my classroom library to spell out "READ". buuuttt I already have letters hanging that spell that out next to my bulletin board. So, that seemed wasteful. Still. I really wanted to do something. With one or some of them.
ABC's and Polka Dots: Monday Made It :: Pencil Drawers
http://abcsandpolkadots.blogspot.com/2015/07/monday-made-it-pencil-drawers.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. Monday Made It : Pencil Drawers. It's a great Monday for a new Monday Made It! I had so much fun with this one! I love any excuse to pull out my Silhouette Cameo and I LOVE adding color to my classroom! I've been using buckets for my sharp and dull pencils for the past few years. You know, those adorable buckets you find in the dollar spot at Target? The kind that I can't stop buying even though I already have more than I know what to do with? Yes, those. ;). Even the same signs!

Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Taking Care of Problems #SOL16. I'm joining with Two Writing Teachers. For the Tuesday Slice of Life. Yesterday I took a personal day. I had scheduled to get my septic pumped. The guys came and there was bad news. My septic was draining properly. Turns out, I have to replace the first 12 feet of the field line, called the header. I did this nine years ago. Should I really have to replace this already? Tuesday, April 5, 2016. Project Presentations - Slice of Life. Chris Lehman put...
