Jan's Gone Cruising | "These three take crooked ways: carts, boats, and musicians" -hindu proverb

Jan's Gone Cruising. These three take crooked ways: carts, boats, and musicians -hindu proverb. August 18, 2012. August 18, 2012. It’s been a number of weeks since we left the Bahamas and came back to Florida and then NJ. I was filled with both happiness and sadness as we docked in Lantana, Florida in June. Our good friend Stew came out to greet us, welcome us back, and drive us out to dinner. His training and wisdom that he shared with us every step of the way was invaluable. Thanks Stew. Our high sea a...

Jan's Gone Cruising. These three take crooked ways: carts, boats, and musicians -hindu proverb. A Visit with the Dead of MOW. Man-O-War on a Walk →. A Little Trespassing Isn’t So Bad. April 5, 2012. We’ve walked this road before and at one point we came to a wooden gate. The gate was open on our previous walks and we tentatively walked a few more feet beyond the gate, not being sure if it was private property. So… lesson learned…. A Little Trespassing Isn’t So Bad! Jan's Gone Cruising. These three take crooked ways: carts, boats, and musicians -hindu proverb. Highlights From the Last Few Weeks. On Our Way Home →. The New Jersey Visit. May 17, 2012. I’m back in the Bahamas after a wonderful NJ visit! The two week NJ visit was an adventure in itself with many lunches/dinners and good visits with family and friends. And thanks to my first class neighbors Bob, Joanne and Brian, who kept an eye on things, my house was still standing. Chris and Jan at Graduation. I&#8217...

Now or Never!: May 2015

Thursday, May 7, 2015. OUT OF THE STREAM AND OUTTA STEAM! The time came when we had to call an end to our visit to Cat Island. Kind seas and a beautiful Southeast breeze made for a wonderful run downwind to Little San Salvador. We used the whisker pole for the first but not the last time. The anchorage at Little San was the rolliest, most uncomfortable anchorages ever. We got up and got out as soon as possible and headed for Davis Harbor on Eleuthera. What kind of critter would nibble at a tomato? Oh wel...

Sunday, June 30, 2013. BIRTHDAYS AND SUMMER FUN! Let’s see, our last post here was on April 24. Since then, we’ve burnt up the highways with trips to Columbus for birthdays, graduations and moving. Then there was Owensboro for a 91. Birthday, Mother’s Day, and just visiting. Kathleen’s grandkids spent 10 days with us while their mother moved to Indiana. Oh, then there was Memorial Day, spent on the boat in Brunswick. Actually, you can’t buy rum in a store that sells wine and beer. And we went underground...

Monday, April 13, 2015. CAT ISLAND'S NOT ABOUT CATS! When we left Blackpoint for Emerald Bay, we had no clear plan for the future. Maybe we’d head down to Georgetown for a day or two and then head for Long Island. Plans are always written in sand at low tide! When we got to Emerald Bay and saw that Cat Island was only 37 miles to the East, everything gelled. We tried to get to Cat two years ago but the weather wouldn’t cooperate. Sometimes one comes across whimsical sculptures on the side of the road.

Wednesday, April 24, 2013. Back in Ft Pierce, we went to the Oyster Festival, had lunch at 12A buoy and visited with friends on F dock. We were anxious to get back to Brunswick and left with the first weather window. Carpaccio at 12A Buoy. If you've never tried 12A Buoy, you owe it to yourself to try it. Bill and Maureen, s/v Kalunamoo. Kathleen's friend, the oyster. The oyster festival is going to the dogs! The car was stuffed and we still had to stop at Total Wine for a case of rum! Go to the ocean!

Wednesday, February 19, 2014. ALL ALONE IN PARADISE. 1600 happy people and a couple of soreheads (and I’m not even sure about the soreheads). This little island has attracted big game fishers and the rich and famous and infamous. Hemingway fished for Blue Marlin here, drank a lot of booze and wrote a bit, “Islands in the Stream” is about Bimini. Richard Nixon had a house here, near his friend, Bebe Rebozo. The best conch salad in all the Bahamas can be found here, a mere 50 miles from Florida. Besides co...

Tuesday, March 24, 2015. BLOWIN' IN THE WIND AT BLACKPOINT. After six straight days of blowing like stink, the wind has finally settled down. We made our escape from Bimini after waiting three weeks for an opportunity. Two nights and three days later, we were in the Exumas. We met Irene and Perry (s/v Tekla Bramble) at Norman’s Cay and along with them worked our way down to Blackpoint. More about that part of the trip in another post. Black Point is a laid back place. http://svnowornever.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 27, 2014. THE GREAT RUM TASTING. Drinking rum and sailing seem to go hand in hand. Rum has been central to sailing since Admiral Edward Vernon, Ole Grog himself portioned out the daily allotment to his crew. Rum is produced in nearly every country of the world and there are probably more examples of this heavenly spirit than any other. So, which does do you sip and which do you swill? A small group of sailors at Bimini Blue Water Marina decided to seek an answer to those questions. We dec...

Now or Never!: THE GREAT ESCAPE

http://svnowornever.blogspot.com/2015/03/escape.html

Tuesday, March 3, 2015. After Weeks of waiting we finally got the weather window we needed to escape the “hustle and bustle” of Bimini and sail eastward. I use “sail” figuratively, the light wind was too close and we motored all day. We left Bimini in dense fog, we could only see a couple of hundred feet ahead and we couldn’t see the channel markers until we were right on them. Thank goodness for GPS breadcrumbs! By sun-up the wind freshened and we unrolled the jib and made good time. Motoring up the cre...
