A blog about compilers, programming and technology. July 27, 2015. I just got informed that my second paper on basic block versioning, an extension of my previous work. I guess when it comes to computer science conferences, you’re either a zero or a one. There is no middle ground. Your idea is either deserving of publication, or piped into /dev/null. It’s really interesting, it has a lot of potential, but. Why do so many computer science papers come without any source code? Downtown, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Through my research in HCI and software engineering tools, I typically make the annual rounds in conferences such as ICSE, FSE, and VL/HCC. Thus, having the opportunity to attend ECOOP 2016. Was definitely outside of my comfort area, but it was worthwhile in that it provided me with exposure to an otherwise enigmatic area of Computer Science. An aspect of ECOOP that I particularly appreciate...

Database Architects: Experiments Hurt the Review Process
http://databasearchitects.blogspot.com/2014/09/experiments-hurt-review-process.html
A blog by and for database architects. Monday, September 8, 2014. Experiments Hurt the Review Process. Experimentally validating (or falsifying) a theory is one of the fundamental aspects of science. As such I have always put a lot of emphasize on experiments, and of course empirical evidence are essential when designing systems. To pick a simple example: merge sort has better asymptotic behavior than quick sort, but in practice quick sort is usually faster. Wall clock is what matters. The first problem ...
