Japan-tastic!

Thursday, May 17, 2007. Steve and I were a bit disorientated. (With all the vendors and neon lights, it was a bit like being George Bailey in Potter’s Ville! As it was, when I ordered my whiskey and coke, they were a bit surprised, then they brought me a whole 5th of whiskey and a full bottle of coke! We couldn't find the hotel our friends had told us about, so we ended up walking down a little alley to a place called ‘The Apple House’ which I thought I’d read about in the guide book. And the cat that ad...

Japan-tastic!: July 2006

http://japan-tastic.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 06, 2006. SO this is my first posting on my offical 'Japan' blog! I'm still in the states, but I received some pics of my apt. in Japan and thought I'd share them! Here is our building, which is fairly usual for Japan:. This is the teeny-tiny kitchen Steve will have to use! This is the main living area- our living room, dining room, and work room all in one! This is a shot from the hallway:. It will be hard to leave Door County, it's been such a wonderful summer staying up here! Well, I'm ...

Japan-tastic!: April 2007

http://japan-tastic.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 05, 2007. I have a TON to tell everyone about the trip to Thailand (what craziness), but while I go through the pics, let me caught up on old stuff- like when Steve and I went to Kyoto in January. FYI: I haven't finished adding all the pics to this blog yet! Three words: I love Kyoto. The city has a great vibe: lots of young people hanging out by the canals, great shopping, as well as tons of culture and history. The first stop was Fushimi Inari Taisho. Then two monks shot off two arrows ...

http://japan-tastic.blogspot.com/2007/02/we-had-our-first-snowfall-today-it-was.html

Thursday, February 01, 2007. We had our first snowfall today! Maybe it’s the lack of the Chicago wind that makes the winter here seem better. Who knows? I’m just going to enjoy my first winter that I wasn’t permanently cold for 4 months on end and every plant in sight didn’t shrivel up and die! Anyway, I have a new list of ‘observations’ in Japan. I hope to get my Kyoto pics downloaded this weekend so I will have more to post soon! They didn’t bring the heaters in until almost January, though, so for a w...

http://japan-tastic.blogspot.com/2006/11/ok-i-need-to-catch-up-on-some-photos.html

Sunday, November 26, 2006. Ok, I need to catch up on some photos before I plunge into the shrine-carrying weekend. For one, I bought this awesome scroll for Halloween in Osaka and forgot to post a pic of it before. Keiko told us that the picture refers to a folktale about a man who tried to poison his wife and that she didn’t die, but her body began to decay while she was alive! Nice and creepy for Halloween, but now it probably looks a bit ominous on the wall! A koto is a 6-foot-long zither with 13 stri...

A Man Dropped in Japan: April 2008

http://japaneriffic.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

A Man Dropped in Japan. Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Myspace Music Blog: Working on a new song. Thursday, April 17, 2008. New Song in the works. So, here's a new song I just wrote a few days ago. This is just the basic structure, which I'll properly record very soon with a bit more arrangement added. For some reason, I seem to gravitate towards writing sad sounding songs whenever I pick up my mandolin. Go figure. But I think the lyrics are hopeful. Eyes to see and ears to hear. Songbird please fly back to me.

A Man Dropped in Japan. Tuesday, July 01, 2008. International Arts and Culture Fest 2008. A few weekends ago I had a performance with a few friends for this International Arts and Culture Fest, hosted by the city of Kawanishi and JET Programme(the company Erin teaches for). I took part in this event last year as well, with some dear friends who no longer live in Japan. So, this year, was a new "band" we put together to perform 4 songs. The players were Jack G. on electric guitar and backing vocals,.

A Man Dropped in Japan. Tuesday, February 27, 2007. Japan will never know what hit them once my time is up here. Speaking of promoting, check this pic of my friends Keiko and Mika and me. I recently played a gig in Shinsaibashi, Osaka at a posh cafe called Espoir, and my friend Shiraisan made this sweet poster for the show. It's the pic I recently use for my Myspace profile. The owner of the cafe had me sign it for him. rock star, right? Sorry Paul Schmitz, this is the best picture of you I could find).

A Man Dropped in Japan. Monday, June 30, 2008. Mr Potato Man visits Osaka. So, this past weekend was sparked by an opportunity to play my music for an event at Mad Kafe in Amemura at moment's notice, and ended in a surreal progression of events due to sharin' good music, meeting cool people, drinking too many energy drinks mixed with alcohol, dancing, lack of sleep, rain, acting, and in the end, talking to a potato. I had a good time exploring the Osaka night life, sharing good music, dancing, meeting co...

A Man Dropped in Japan. Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Ohanami and playing tour guide. I also took the time to walk and bike around our neighborhood in Kashiba, and enjoyed the local sakuras in bloom. A Man Dropped in Japan. Monday, January 08, 2007. New Year in Tokyo. So Erin and I spent ringing in our New Year out East in and near Tokyo. We had such a great time spent with my cousin Corrie, her husband Rich, and there kids James, Luke, and Katrina. We also visited a shrine with the family in Narita on the 2nd before we left for Tokyo, and got a taste of the New Year Japanese style, crowds and all. It was very cool, but I'm not a big fan of. From the much heavier kimonos most. So, we got back to the ...

A Man Dropped in Japan: Exploring Kyoto, Part 2 of 3: Kyudo, Ancient Art of Archery

A Man Dropped in Japan. Monday, March 10, 2008. Exploring Kyoto, Part 2 of 3: Kyudo, Ancient Art of Archery. Erin had studied Kyudo in Chicago, before we moved to Japan; so, she's got the experience and understanding of this subtle yet powerful martial art. She started her practice of Kyudo again here in Japan with our friend Doc, also a JET teacher. He, along with our Japanese friend Yoshi, came with us to enjoy this special event. It was pretty crowded, so everyone was jocking to get a good look at the...

With the recent theft of my mini, I have an oportunty to start again, and maybe improve on what I had before. The problem is, I dont think there was much wrong with the old setup. In fact, on it's last outing, before being so cruelly nicked from me, it set a new track record for the mini class. There's a HPI mini?

Japanese Tattoo Pictures

Plumpness Japanese people like to stick tattoos lets ditubuhnya said the history of Japanese tattoos. When a country has conjured-up one of the most amazing styles of body art around, how on earth can it be so idiotic as to ban it? This is a question that tattoo enthusiasts have been deliberating over for a number of decades now, but luckily for us, this style has broken out of the Far East and has made it to our shores. Traditionally, before the style of tattooing was banned. In Japan, body art was ofte...
